JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. -- Etching another historic performance into the record books, the Christopher Newport men's golf team fired an eight-over 872 (295-289-288) at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational to finish tied for 14th in the 30-team event. The Captains were led by freshman
Patrick O'Rourke (-4) with a top-25 individual finish.
The 872 is tied for tied for eighth all-time in program history for total score and in relation to par, the eight-over is tied for the fifth-best 54-hole tournament performance. It stands as the best for the program since the 2023 version of the Jekyll Island Collegiate where CNU fired a two-under 862.
O'Rourke, who finished the three-day event at four-under par after a one-over 73 on Sunday, put his name behind only Alex Price and Robb Kinder, two CNU legends, with the seventh lowest 54-hole tournament performance in program history. He set the freshman scoring record for a three-round tournament as the first rookie ever to record a four-under showing.
The final round saw a pair of CNU players card two-under 70's as
Fischer Leggitt and
Nick Alexander had the team-best scoring performance on Sunday. For Leggitt, a double bogey on 11 was followed by a birdie on the 353-yard par four 12th and the rookie went on a torrid run. Including that birdie, he was five-under over the next 15 holes without anything worse than a par. He closed out the round with his second career round under par. Alexander turned in a near perfect card with only one blemish, a single bogey on No. 16, but the junior had three birdies and 14 pars to climb to 60th on the individual leaderboard. Leggitt finished 54th with a one-over 217.
Both
Nathan Smith and
Jimmy Spallone tied for 111th at 11-over. The duo each carded three-over 75's on Sunday to help chip in the Captains' 288 as a team. Each player sank three birdies in the final round.
CNU will close out the regular season in Williamsburg on April 13-14 as the Captains face the field at the Sam Snead Collegiate at the Golden Horseshoe.
