Captains Tied for 14th After Two Rounds at the Sam Snead Collegiate in Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Christopher Newport sophomore Jacob Foti (+7) is leading the way for the Captains' men's golf team after 36 holes of golf at the Sam Snead Collegiate held at the Golden Horseshoe GC in Williamsburg, Virginia. Foti is tied for 30th place after firing a 149 (75-74) on the opening day.

The Captains (+38) signed for a 606 on Monday including a 297 in the first round and a 309 in the second trip around the course. The 21-team field is led by second-ranked Carnegie Mellon (+7) by one stroke ahead of third-ranked Methodist (+8).

Patrick O'Rourke (+10) and Nick Alexander (+10) are tied for 51st after the first two rounds while Fischer Leggitt (+15) is in 76th and Nathan Smith (+22) is in 104th.

Taking on the 6,878-yard Par 71 layout, the Captains were in sixth place after the first 18 holes with a 13-over 697.  Alexander scored a team-best even par 71 with one of the best rounds of the year. He birdied the 498-yard par five 2nd hole and also the 372-yard par four 9th while adding 12 pars in the round.

Not far behind was O'Rourke, opening the day with back-to-back birdies and finishing the first round with a team-high four birdies. He finished the first 18 holes in 74 strokes at three-over par. One back of his freshman teammate, Foti had a stellar front nine in the opening round, shooting a one-under 35 with eight pars and one birdie. A single triple bogey marred an otherwise exceptional round that included a team-high 14 pars and one birdie.

Leggitt added his score in the first round with a six-over 77. He also chipped in his second round score with a nine-over 80 that included three birdies. Leggitt opened the second round with a birdie three on the 348-yard par four 5th hole while sinking two more on the back nine. He had a two on the 269-yard par three 12th and a three on the 444-yard par four 18th.

Foti again rolled through the front nine, despite a triple bogey on his first hole, the 6th. On the other eight holes, he had seven pars and a birdie four on the 498-yard par five 2nd. His second round 74 included another birdie on the mammoth 634-yard par five 15th and six pars.

Smith, at six-over, and O'Rourke, at seven-over, rounded out the CNU scoring in the second round. Smith closed on a tear as he was two-under in his final seven holes. O'Rourke dropped in a pair of birdies and ten pars.

The teams will return to the course on Tuesday for the third and final round. Live scoring is available online with the link found on the men's golf schedule at CNUsports.com.
