JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. -- Christopher Newport freshman
Patrick O'Rourke (-5) fired a four-under 68 in the second round of the 2026 Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational to climb to 14th on the individual leaderboard and lead the Captains on day two. The Captains are in 18th place overall at +8 after firing a 289 as a group in the second round.
O'Rourke left the course with a smile on his face as he dropped in an impressive Eagle to close out his round. After taking 66 strokes through the first 17 holes played, he stepped up to the 406-yard par four 9th hole to close out his round. After his drive, he stared down the green and delivered a dart that found the bottom of the cup for an Eagle two and a historic finish for the Captains.
He tied the freshman scoring record in relation to par (-4) and is only the sixth freshman in CNU men's golf history to fire a 68 or better in a single round. Only he and Christopher Newport legend Alex Price accomplished the feat on a Par 72 track as O'Rourke's effort is the first 68 since Price established the record at the Savannah Invitational on March 9, 2020.
Prior to the highlight-reel Eagle, O'Rourke had five birdies and nine pars in his second round. Sitting at five-under par with a 139 (71-68) through the first 36 holes, the CNU freshman is just seven strokes back of the tournament leader, Turner Chiles (-12) from Sewanee.
All five Captains finished at 75 or better on day two with fellow freshmen
Fischer Leggitt and
Jimmy Spallone leading the way at one-over with matching 73's.
Nick Alexander and
Nathan Smith were at three-over par with 75's.
Leggitt had four birdies and eight pars while Spallone put together a clean front nine with nine straight pars. The run was actually ten and he was one-under over his last 11 holes. Smith had three birdies and Alexander added two.
The Captains will return to action on Sunday to close out the 54-hole event. Live scoring is available online at CNUsports.com.
