WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Earning his first collegiate victory at the Glenn Heath Shipbuilders Memorial, rookie
Fischer Leggitt (+1) earned medalist honors to lead the way for Christopher Newport men's golf this week.
Jacob Foti (+3) also logged a top-three finish while three more Captains finished in the top-25 of the 73-player field.
It was the first individual victory for the Captains since
Owen Cook captured the 74th VSGA Intercollegiate Championship in October 23. He is the first freshman to capture a tournament victory since CNU Athletics Hall of Famer Joseph Evans won the Camp LeJeune Scarlet title in March 2009.
Leggitt went on a birdie run in the second round, dropping in three straight on holes 3-5 and finished the second round with five total birdies. He scored a 73 (35-38) in the second round after recording an even par 72 (35-37) in the opening round. In the first round, Leggitt had 12 pars and three birdies to wrap up the event with eight total birdies.
The CNU rookie edged out Groves Williams from Hampden-Sydney College by one stroke to capture the win.
Just two strokes back was Foti in a tie for third, who closed out the 36-hole event with a 147 (75-72). He finished with six birdies including knocking in birdie on the 323-yard par four 3rd and 471-yard par five 14th holes in both rounds. He also birdied No. 7 and No. 8 once.
The Captains also saw rookie
Nathan Smith (+11) tie for 19th wth a 155 (77-78) while senior
Stephen Patterson (+12) and freshman
Jimmy Spallone (+12) tied for 21st one stroke behind. Patterson fired a 156 (75-81) and Spallone matched with his own 156 (81-75).
Owen Taylor tied for 27th with a 158 (71-87);
J.P. Carr tied for 46th with a 162 (85-77);
Charles Valiulis tied for 48th with a 163 (81-82);
Connor Wood tied for 50th with a 164 (89-75), and;
Paxton Ihm finished 60th with a 168 (87-81).
