HOLLILNS, Va. -- CJ Reeders and
Jack Armel earned first-team All-State honors, while six other Captains collected second-team plaudits as Christopher Newport was well-represented on the VaSID All-State Men's Outdoor Track & Field Teams, which were announced by the Virginia Sports Information Directors on Tuesday afternoon.
Reeders received a spot on the top squad for his work in the jumps, while Armel was celebrated in the decathlon. Meanwhile,
James Baptist,
Daniel Fox,
Ryan Henderson,
Joe Kilama,
Sam Koltisko, and
Gustavo Leitao garnered second-team nods for their efforts during the spring campaign as well.
Polishing off an incredible season, Reeders previously secured All-American honors and was named the Coast-to-Coast Conference Men's Track & Field Athlete of the Year following remarkable work in the triple jump. The second-year star placed seventh in the event during the NCAA Outdoor Championships after setting a PR with a 14.87-meter effort at the Rowan Last Chance Meet. That performance marked the sixth-best in the nation in 2021.
Also an All-Conference and All-Region honoree, Reeders won both the triple jump and long jump crowns during the league championship. The Quinton, Virginia native eventually posted 11 victories during the spring, including an incredible stretch of five consecutive meets in which he went undefeated against collegiate competition in the triple jump.
Flashing his versatility in the spring, Armel showcased his athleticism in the decathlon. At Mount Olive in May, he posted a score of 5,521, which was the second-highest total in the South / Southeast Region and the finest mark in Virginia. It also placed him fourth on the program's all-time charts and was the best performance by a Captain since 2015.
In addition to his historic work in the decathlon, Armel also excelled in a variety of other events. During the Coast-to-Coast Championships, he scored in the javelin after placing fourth with a 40-meter heave. Meanwhile, the Winchester, Virginia native also placed seventh in the league in both the long jump and 110-hurdles while adding a 10th-place showing in the 400-hurdles.
Also excelling in the decathlon, Baptist earned second-team All-State honors for his work in the combined event. During the New Captains Classic in April, he won the decathlon with a score of 5,182. That placed him second in the state, fourth in the region, and seventh on the program's all-time performance list. He also scored in the pole vault during the league championship after placing fifth with a 3.41-meter clearance.
Orchestrating one of the finest freshman campaigns in recent memory, Fox was celebrated for his work in the sprints after being named the league's Rookie of the Year and Track Athlete of the Meet during the conference championship. The first-year phenom captured league titles in the 100, 200, and 4x100-relay. Meanwhile, he threw down the program's seventh-fastest clocking in the 100 (10.72) and eighth-best mark in the 200 (21.76) while ranking in the top-40 nationally in both events.
One of the top mid-distance runners in the state, Henderson was dominant in the 1500 throughout the 2021 campaign. He won the league title in the event after posting a time of 3:58.76 during the conference meet. Three weeks later, the third-year standout established a new PR with a 3:54.07 clocking at the Emory Final Qualifier. That vaulted him to fifth on the program's all-time performance list and marked the seventh-best showing in the South / Southeast Region during the spring.
Quickly establishing himself as one of the top throwers in the Coast-to-Coast Conference, Kilama put together a decorated season during his first outdoor campaign. At the league meet, he set new PRs in both the discus (40.73 meters) and hammer (46.42). Both of those marks placed him second among conference competitors and earned him a pair of All-League accolades. His performance in the hammer also placed him sixth on the program's all-time charts and ranked 10th in the South / Southeast.
Continuing to star in the distance events, Koltisko earned a pair of All-Conference honors during his first outdoor season. In the 10,000, he ran away with the league championship after setting a new PR with a time of 34:20.62. Additionally, the second-year speedster earned recognition in the 5000 while also setting a new personal best with a time of 14:56.54 earlier in the spring. That marked the seventh-best time in program history and the 11th-fastest in the region during the 2021 season.
Rounding out the All-State honorees, Leitao was honored for his efforts in the hurdles. Stepping up when it mattered most, he came through with a PR during the Coast-to-Coast Conference Championships with a time of 56.98 in the 400-hurdles. That earned him the league crown and beat the runner-up by over two full seconds. It also placed him among the top runners in Virginia and slotted him 15th on the South / Southeast leaderboard during the spring campaign.
Aided by the efforts of the eight All-State honorees, Christopher Newport won the conference championship and finished the year slotted sixth in the regional rankings.
