FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Mazie Clark and
Daniel Fox were celebrated as Coast-to-Coast Conference Track & Field Athletes of the Week after the two standouts helped Christopher Newport kick off the 2021-22 campaign with an impressive showcase on Sunday during the Holiday Open at the Freeman Center.
The weekly honor is the second for both Captains. Fox was previously celebrated as the Men's Track Athlete of the Week on April 13, 2021, while Clark earned the women's field accolade on April 27, 2021.
In her fourth year with the Captains, Clark opened the season with an outstanding effort on Sunday. During the Holiday Open, she led all Division III competitors in a pair of throwing events. Headlining her performance, she unleashed a 12.86-meter heave in the weight throw, which established a new PR and placed her 10th on the program's all-time performance list.
Later in the competition, Clark returned with an 11.08-meter toss in the shot put. That effort placed her fifth overall at the meet, slotting just behind four throwers from Division I Hampton.
While Clark was starring in the throws, Fox was lighting up the track. Kicking off his sophomore campaign in style, the second-year speedster swept a pair of sprints during the Holiday Open. His finest performance came in the 60 when he threw down a time of 7.03. That marked the top clocking by a Captain since All-American Ryan Scott completed the race in 6.95 during the 2017 season.
Meanwhile, Fox added another victory in the 200 after crossing the line in 23.05. That was the best mark by a Captain since Kurt Waller won the 2019 league championship in 22.60.
The weekly awards join an ever-growing list of accolades for the two stars. Fox is the reigning Coast-to-Coast Conference Track & Field Rookie of the Year and a three-time defending league champion. Meanwhile, Clark is an All-Region and All-State performer for her work in the throws.
Clark, Fox, and the rest of their teammates will return to action on January 15 when Christopher Newport hosts the Captains Invitational at the Freeman Center.
