MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. -- After the first of three rounds at the DIII Golfweek Invitational, the Christopher Newport men's golf team is off to a strong start with three Captains in the top-20 leading the team to a fourth-place showing.
Alex Price,
Robb Kinder, and
Jackson Gessaman are all two-over through 18 holes as the team finished the opening round at 11-over par.
In addition to the trio of top-scoring Captains,
Carrter Morris (+5) and Aidan Brown (+7) also finished sub-80 in the opening round. CNU was one of only seven teams to score all five players sub-80 and one of only four teams with three players at 73 or lower.
Christopher Newport is tied for fourth with Oglethorpe and sits just eight strokes behind Emory for the tournament lead. The 295 is the first sub-300 round of the season for the Captains' men's golf team and comes on the Par 72 Raven Golf Club at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort.
A pair of eagles late in the day highlighted the Captains' action on Sunday. Both came on the same hole as Price and Gessaman each dropped in three's on the 550-yard Par 5 17th hole. Kinder birdied the hole and added a birdie on the 431-yard Par 4 18th to finish tied with Price and Gessaman.
Price added 12 pars and one birdie en route to his team-leading performance. Gessaman sunk the most under par putts with four holes at birdie or better while Kinder notched three birdies for his 73.
Morris was very consistent, dropping in a team-high 14 pars and leading Christopher Newport to the third most Even holes with 56 as a team. He is tied for 57th.
Aidan Baron (+7) is tied for 80th in the 120-player field and scored a pair of birdies on the back nine.
