CNU Men's Golf Grabs Top Five Finish at Tartan Invitational; Alex Price Ties for Second

LIGONIER, Pa. -- Christopher Newport men's golf wrapped up a fourth-place showing at the Tartan Invitational on Tuesday afternoon after firing a 58-over par 922 (306-308-308) in the 54-hole tournament. CNU junior Alex Price (+3) tied for second on the individual leaderboard to finish as runner-up with Emory's Max Schwarz. 

Cooper Hrabak (Methodist) finished with five birdies in his last eight holes to capture individual medalist honors while the Emory Eagles (+41) edged out the hosts from Carnegie Mellon (+43) for the team title. Christopher Newport finished 17 strokes back of the win after firing the third-best round of the day on Tuesday. 

The 20th-ranked CNU golf team took fourth place in the 13-team field with four players finishing in the top half of the individual leaderboard. Price tied for 2nd and was followed by Robb Kinder (+17), tied for 15th, and Carrter Morris (+21) and Jackson Gessaman (+21), tied for 33rd. Not far behind, sophomore Aidan Baron (+26) tied for 46th in the 66-player field. 

Morris registered the finest round of the day for CNU, shooting up 22 spots on the leaderboard with a one-over 73. Over the two-day event Morris signed for a 237 (83-81-73) and tied for the team lead in pars recorded with 31 out of the possible 54. On Tuesday, Morris drained 13 pars and two birdies while dropping only three bogeys for a clean card to lead the way for the Captains. 

Price also put together a long run of pars for CNU in the middle of his round, scoring even on eight of the nine holes on the back nine. He finished with two over par holes in his final three to slip back to the pack, but overall put another punctuation mark on a strong tournament appearance. He posted a 219 (70-72-77) over three rounds while scoring 31 pars, 11 birdies, and leading the tournament in Par 3 scoring with a 2.92 average. 

Rookie Jackson Gessaman had the highlight of the day when he Eagled the 571-yard Par 5 11th hole in his fifth hole of the day. It was one of only 11 Eagles scored in the tournament and got Gessaman back to Even early before adding another birdie on the 598-yard Par 5 18th. Overall, he finished with a 237 (80-78-79) and fired the third lowest round of the day for CNU on Tuesday. 

Aidan Baron provided the final score for the team in the third round with a matching 79. Overcoming two tough holes in the first half of the round, the second-year player rebounded nicely by scoring Par on his final seven holes. He also had three birdies in the third round and finished the 54-hole event in 242 strokes (81-82-79). 

Finally, Robb Kinder tied for 15th overall with a 233 (75-77-81). The junior scored four birdies and five pars in the third round and ranked second in the tournament in Par 5 scoring (4.50). He tied Schwarz with a six-under score on the long holes over the duration of the event. 

The No. 20 CNU Men's Golf team will next play at the Golfweek D3 Fall Invitational on October 17-19 with live stats available from Destin, Fla.
