BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Jason Putnam headlined a group of five Captains who secured All-State honors, while Tyler Wingard was celebrated as the Coach of the Year as Christopher Newport was well-represented on the inaugural VaSID All-State Men's Indoor Track & Field Team, which was voted on by the Virginia Sports Information Directors.

Putnam brought home first-team All-State nods in distance events and was a second-team selection in the mid-distance category. With his two awards, he was one of just three athletes in Virginia to earn a pair of individual honors during the year.

In addition to Putnam, freshman CJ Reeders secured a spot on the first-team All-State squad for his work in jumps. Meanwhile, three other standouts earned second-team plaudits. Sam Koltisko joined Putnam as an award-winning distance standout, while Jack Armel earned recognition for his efforts in the heptathlon, and Allan Pedin was honored in the pole vault.

Capping off a sensational career, Putnam grabbed a pair of Capital Athletic Conference titles during his senior campaign after running away with the mile and 3000 crowns during the league championship. With that performance, he became the first male in CAC history to sweep both events while becoming just the third runner to win a pair of individual distance titles at a single conference meet.

During the year, Putnam posted a PR in the 3000 at the Tufts National Qualifier after finishing in 8:43.03. That ranked fifth in the South / Southeast during the year and earned him All-Region honors. The Fuquay Varina, North Carolina native also threw down a season-best clocking in the mile with a 4:21.93 mark at the Camel City Invitational and was an All-Conference and All-Region performer on the cross country team in the fall.

Joining Putnam on the state's top squad, Reeders pieced together a fantastic debut with the Captains. Starring in the triple jump, the first-year sensation qualified for the NCAA Championships after landing a personal-best distance of 14.36 meters. Placing his name among the elites in program history, he became the first freshman to qualify for the men's national meet since 2013.

Securing All-Conference and All-Region accolades for his work in the triple jump during the year, Reeders won the league title with a 13.85-meter leap at the winter meet. The Quinton, Virginia native also scored with a sixth-place showing in the long jump at the CAC Championships and landed a season-best mark of 6.53 meters in the event during the CNU Holiday Open.

Quickly establishing himself as one of the top heptathletes in the region, Armel put together a solid rooke campaign. The freshman notched All-Region accolades in the heptathlon after posting a score of 3,880 points at the CNU Qualifier, which ranked third in the South / Southeast. Showing off his versatility, the Winchester, Virginia native also came in third in the pole vault, fifth in the 60-hurdles, and eighth in the long jump during the CAC Championships.

Rounding out the squad's decorated freshman class, Koltisko was a dominant force in the distance events during the year. Stepping up under the bright lights, he became the first freshman in league history to win the indoor 5000 after running away with the title in 15:18.83, which also earned him a spot on the All-Region team. An All-Conference performer on the cross country squad as well, the South Riding, Virginia native also placed fourth in the league in the 3000 during the winter.

Continuing his award-winning work in the pole vault, Pedin put together another strong season as a junior. Claiming his third career conference title, he won the indoor pole vault after topping 4.25 meters at the league meet. That effort also slotted him among the top-10 in the region during the year. In his career, the Richmond, Virginia native is a four-time All-Conference performer and was named an All-Region honoree as a freshman in 2018.

Along with the decorated student-athletes, Wingard was named the first-ever Virginia Men's Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year. Under Wingard's tutelage, the men won five individual conference titles, secured seven All-Region honors, and earned 11 total All-League accolades during the 2019-20 indoor campaign. Eventually, the Captains laid claim to their fourth conference championship in the past five years.

In addition to the All-State honor, Wingard and his assistants were previously celebrated as the Capital Athletic Conference Men's Indoor Coaching Staff of the Year for their work during the season.
