NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Following a lengthy layoff, the seventh-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team will return to action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. when CNU hosts Randolph-Macon in a non-conference battle at Captains Turf Field.
Â
Entering the contest, Christopher Newport sits at 3-0, including 2-0 at home. Meanwhile, Randolph-Macon is also 3-0 and will be making its first road appearance of the season.
Â
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.
Â
Coming into the game, CNU is ranked seventh in the latest NFHCA Coaches Poll, which was released by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association on Tuesday afternoon. The Captains earned 717 points in the poll, just 35 shy of fellow CAC member Salisbury.
Â
At the top of the rankings, Middlebury holds down the No. 1 position, while Messiah, Tufts, TCNJ, and Babson round out the top-five.
Â
The Captains have been out of action since September 9 as a result of Hurricane Florence. Prior to the respite, CNU improved to 3-0 with a 3-0 victory at Virginia Wesleyan. During that contest,
Jackie Kotoriy dished out three assists, while
Courtney Fiest hammered a pair of goals. For her work, Fiest was eventually honored as the CAC Offensive Player of the Week on September 10.
Â
So far this season, Fiest leads the squad with 10 points and five goals, while Kotoriy has five points, including three assists.
Rachel Cooke and
Courtnie Greene also have three points apiece. Overall, eight different Captains have already registered a point in the first three games of the season.
Â
Along with the veteran contributors, the squad has also received significant contributions from its newcomers in 2018.
Izzy Diz and
Nyla Lewis have helped anchor the defense while starting all three contests. Meanwhile, fellow freshmen
Sarah Coon,
Kirsten Zeigler, and
Natalie Corson have seen action in all three contests as well.
Â
Randolph-Macon has also been on a weather-related break since September 9. The Yellow Jackets have gotten off to a quick start in 2018 with three straight wins, including back-to-back triumphs over CAC members Frostburg State and St. Mary's (Md.). The 3-0 start is the program's finest in nearly 20 years.
Â
So far this season, Maria Teresa Ambrogi-Torres leads the team with five points, including two goals. The sophomore was a third-team All-Conference performer last year. Meanwhile, Erin Barringer has three points, while Megan May has a pair of defensive saves. Between the pipes, Katie Thompson has compiled a 0.67 goals-against-average and an .846 save percentage.
Â
In 17 all-time meetings between the two programs, CNU holds a perfect 17-0 record. Last year, the Captains registered a 2-0 triumph in Ashland.
Rachael Allshouse and
Lily Bryngelson registered the goals for Christopher Newport, while RMC's Kelsey Stanley collected 22 saves.
