COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Excelling both on and off the field during the 2025 campaign, the Christopher Newport field hockey program received the NFHCA National Academic Team Award, which was announced by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association on Tuesday morning.
The prestigious honor is bestowed upon programs that achieved a team grade-point-average of 3.50 or higher during the fall semester.
CNU earned the award for the seventh time in school history. Most recently, the Captains were recognized in 2021, which capped off a run of four straight award-winning seasons. The program also collected the accolade in 2013 and 2016.
The team honor continued an impressive stretch of academic awards for Christopher Newport. Last week, nine members of the program were selected to the NFHCA National Academic Squad after posting cumulative GPAs above 3.5. That group included three-time honorees
Kendall Gibson,
Caroline Hughlett,
Courtney Hughlett, and
Lindsey Loar as well
Brylee Johnston,
Avery Mast,
Anna Mosciano,
Gigi Stephan, and
Kelly Via.
Adding to their award-winning haul, Johnston and the Hughlett twins were also hailed as Scholars of Distinction by the NFHCA. That award was presented to individuals with a cumulative GPA above 3.9.
In addition to their work in the classroom, the Captains were equally successful on the field in the fall. During the 2025 campaign, Christopher Newport advanced to the Final Four for the second time in program history while compiling a 19-1 record. Along the way, CNU spent seven weeks ranked first in the NFHCA National Coaches Poll, including six as the unanimous top team in the country.
