NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Putting together historic efforts in a multitude of disciplines, the Christopher Newport track & field teams wrapped up a successful showing at the New Captains Classic on Saturday at POMOCO Stadium.
Â
Leading the way,
Legend Hayes established a new school record in the discus. The senior unleashed a 53.42-meter heave, which topped
Brendon Burrows' previous standard of 50.81. Fittingly, Burrows also eclipsed his own record after finishing second in the event with a 51.90-meter toss.
Â
Equally strong in throwing events,
Sarah Johnson and
Hannah Shoemaker added memorable efforts on the women's side. On Friday evening, Johnson registered the program's 10th-best performance in the hammer after landing a 39.65-meter distance. Less than 24 hours later, Shoemaker made her mark in the discus after vaulting to fifth on the program's all-time list with a 38.28-meter toss. Johnson, who already ranks second in school history in the discus, just missed matching her PR after finishing third in the event with a 39.77-meter throw.
Â
Shoemaker also captured a victory in the shot put with a 13.51-meter toss, while Hayes finished fourth on the men's side (14.41 meters).
Â
In other events,
Cullen Monahan and
Daniel Cretney moved to second all-time in a pair of distance disciplines. Monahan won the 800 with a time of 1:51.13, which also established a new Capital Athletic Conference record. Meanwhile, Cretney captured the 3000-steeplechase in 9:22.11.
Cavanaugh McGaw also threw down the program's fifth-fastest time in the 800 after finishing second overall in 1:52.66.
Â
For the women,
Monica Lannen,
Abby Snyder, and
Jessica Lee moved up the program's all-time performance lists in distance events as well. Lannen climbed to third in the 1500 (4:38.81), Snyder jumped to seventh in the 3000-steeplechase (11:51.69), and Lee moved to ninth in the 5000 after crossing the line in 18:43.63 on Friday evening.
Â
Also scorching the track on Saturday,
Hunter Sutliff posted a time of 54.88 in the 400-hurdles. That ranks fifth all-time at CNU and stands as the program's fastest clocking since 1997.
Â
Along with his record-setting run in the 800, Monahan came back to help the 4x400-relay jump up the national leaderboards as well. Teaming up with McGaw,
Kurt Waller, and
Ryan Scott, he led the foursome to a time of 3:17.13. That ranks among the top-10 nationally this year.
Scott, Waller,
Derek Tay, and
Nick Johnson also cruised to a time of 41.75 in the 4x100-relay. That also stands among the top-10 in the NCAA this year.
Â
In addition to his work on the relays, Scott won the 100 in 10.92. Among other victorious performances,
Jeremiah Bethea registered the top clearance in the pole vault after topping 4.11 meters, while
Daniel Read claimed the 5000 on Friday with a time of 15:17.96.
"It was great to see some more Nationals level performances posted - Legend & Brendon in the Discus; Cullen & Cav in the 800m; Hunter in the 400m Hurdles; Danny in the Steeplechase; the Men's 4x1; Monica in the 1500m; and
Hannah Shoemaker in the Shot Put," said head coach
Tyler Wingard, whose student-athletes posted 28 PRs during the two-day competition. "Some of those marks will need to improve to cement a spot at the Championships, but it is great to have so many people moving into range. We made a lot of good steps forward on the Conference level, too, and with the tough challenge Salisbury poses on the women's side, we needed those breakthroughs."
Â
Christopher Newport will return to action on May 4 when the Captains look to defend their league titles at the CAC Championships, which will be hosted by Salisbury.
