YORK, Pa. -- Brittan Muir established a new career record for minutes played by a field player, but the 10th-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team dropped a 2-1 overtime decision at York (Pa.) during a Capital Athletic Conference showdown on Saturday afternoon at Kinsley Field.
Â
Playing all 74 minutes, Muir moved past former teammate
Mackenzie Neylon on the all-time minutes played list at CNU. The senior standout has now played 4,480 career minutes, topping Neylon's total of 4,468 set from 2014-17. Muir now sits just 92 minutes shy of the overall record set by former goalkeeper Bailey Lien.
Â
Along with Muir's historic efforts,
Courtney Fiest scored Christopher Newport's lone goal during the contest, while
Olivia Davis contributed four stops between the pipes.
Izzy Diz also added her first career defensive save during a solid effort by CNU's back line.
Â
With the setback, Christopher Newport falls to 8-3 on the season, including 1-1 in league action. The victory bumps York (Pa.) to 8-5 with a 2-0 mark against conference foes.
Â
Early in the first half, the two teams traded runs. York earned a quick corner, but Davis kicked it away before
Rachel Cooke smacked the rebound out of the circle. Moments later, on the other side,
Courtnie Greene slipped a feed through the YCP defense to
Rachael Allshouse, who burst up the field and whipped a rope that just ran wide.
Â
Trying to keep possession, Cooke intercepted a pass at midfield before
Bailey Miller stopped one at the 25. Unfortunately, the Spartans eventually regained control and marched down the field.
Â
Facing a relentless attack in the middle of the period, Muir made a huge tackle along the left post to stunt a run before Diz chipped out a long feed that trickled into the circle on the right side. Later, with 10 minutes remaining in the half, the hosts earned back-to-back corners, but Cooke deflected a pass on the first attempt before Muir punched away the second to keep the game scoreless.
Â
Retaliating on the other side, Fiest grabbed a loose ball, cut around a defender, and ripped a rocket, but York's goalie made a sprawling kick save at the last minute to close off the rally.
Â
Continuing to trade blows, York finally connected in the 30th minute off a corner to steal a 1-0 lead. Later, the Spartans tried to extend the advantage with a late push at the end of the period, but Davis stoned another shot before Diz cleaned up on the back end with a gorgeous defensive save to keep the deficit at one entering the break.
Â
Early in second half, both defenses continued to have their hands full. The Captains earned five corners in the first 10 minutes of the period, but York brushed aside every opportunity. On the other side, the hosts earned a pair of corners, but Davis knocked down a high rocket on the first attempt, while Greene blocked a rope on the second try.
Â
Still pushing back against the York attack,
Ariana Samuel grabbed a loose ball at midfield and Cooke intercepted a floater before the Captains went to work on the other side.
Â
Testing the Spartans, Cooke punched a pass to Fiest, who knocked it over to Allshouse. With some room to work, she spun a laser that just sailed over the crossbar. Moments later, after YCP attempted to clear the defensive end, Fiest took over.
Â
In the 55th minute, the sophomore grabbed the ball along the near sideline. Storming up the field, she cruised past a host of defenders before cutting towards the cage from the right side. Pulling up along the post, she eventually drilled a dart from close range to even the score at one.
Â
After Christopher Newport brushed aside a pair of York corners on the other side, the Captains kept poking the Spartans. Dropping a few surprises on the YCP defense,
Kennedy Johnson used a perfect aerial along the far sideline, which cleared several defenders and generated a great run by
Jackie Kotoriy. Later, Fiest twirled through a pair of defenders at the top of the circle before earning a corner with nine minutes left, but the squad's ensuing shot dribbled wide.
Â
Although the Spartans eventually grabbed possession and marched down the field, they ran into Muir. In the very minute she set the program record, the senior badgered an attacker on the near sideline, forced her back into the teeth of the defense, and caused a turnover. Seconds later, she sailed a pass up the turf to flip the field and give possession back to the attack.
Â
With time running down, both teams picked up the pace. On a York breakaway, Cooke blew back and bottled up the surge before any damage could be done. Allshouse also picked off a looping rainbow and generated a great scoring opportunity with a sprint of her own, but YCP's back line was able to interfere just enough to keep the ball out of the cage.
Â
Finally, in the waning moments of regulation, Christopher Newport earned one final corner, but the squad's last-ditch effort was brushed aside.
Â
Entering overtime, York had the first opportunity to end the contest, but Davis stoned a corner attempt. Later,
Nyla Lewis had a great run going the other way, but her shot was stopped. Keeping the pressure on, Allshouse and Greene had a two-on-one surge, but the deep Spartan just got her stick on the pass to thwart the play.
Â
Unfortunately, that chance was the last opportunity for the Captains as York earned a penalty stroke in the 74th minute and quickly converted to ice the victory.
Â
Overall, York held an 11-8 advantage in corners, while both teams uncorked 12 shots.
Â
Christopher Newport will return to action on Monday when the team travels to No. 17 Johns Hopkins for a 4:30 p.m. showdown.
