FROSTBURG, Md. -- The Christopher Newport men's track & field team won the program's first-ever Capital Athletic Conference outdoor championship as the Captains capitalized on four individual titles to claim the conference crown on Saturday at Frostburg State's Bobcat Stadium.
Sweeping both the indoor and outdoor conference titles this year, the Captains posted 200 points to out-distance runner-up Salisbury by 57. Wesley finished third overall with 91 points, while York (Pa.) and Penn State Harrisburg rounded out the top-five.
Leading the way,
Charlie Pruitt won the 10,000 title on Friday evening with a time of 32:45.73. That performance not only moved him to fourth in program history, but it also broke the CAC Championship record. Meanwhile,
Evan Fabish also pieced together an outstanding effort in the 3000-steeplechase as the freshman won the league title in 9:41.09.
Along with the distance runners,
Jonathan Graham captured CAC glory in the pole vault after eclipsing 4.55 meters, while
Wesley Shrieves rounded out the individual champions with a height of 1.93 meters in the high jump. That effort equaled his PR and matched the seventh-highest clearance in program history.
In addition to the champions, several other Captains excelled in field events.
Robert Graham broke his own school record in the hammer throw with a 52.34-meter heave, which placed him second overall on Saturday.
Legend Boyesen also came in second in the discus (45.48 meters), while
Brendon Burrows was third (44.52). Christopher Newport also picked up a slew of points in the long jump as
Jordan Roach finished second (6.91), while Shrieves came in third (6.53), and
Philip Christophe was fourth (6.40).
Among other standouts in field events,
Ryan Long was third in the shot put (13.64) and fifth in the discus (42.00),
Michael Agyeman was third in the triple jump (13.13), and
Babadamilola Alao matched that finish in the pole vault (4.10).
In the sprints,
Ryan Scott was simply outstanding. The sophomore speedster came in second in the 110-hurdles with a 14.93 mark before finishing third in both the 100 (10.68) and 200 (21.69).
Hunter Sutliff also scored in both the 110- and 400-hurdles, while Scott, Roach,
Lewis Folli, and
Brandon Martin teamed up for a second-place finish in the 4x100. Together, the foursome registered a time of 42.98, which was just a fraction of a second away from a league title.
In distance events, CNU racked up points across the board. Along with Pruitt's title in the 10,000,
Sam Murch came in second (32:48.28),
Matthew Burke was third (32:55.46), and
Will Bruner was sixth (33:21.97).
