WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Guided by impressive performances from
Ryan Scott and the squad's distance runners, the Christopher Newport track & field teams capped off a strong showing at the Colonial Relays on Saturday afternoon at William & Mary's Zable Stadium and Stimson Throwing Field.
Leading the way on the men's side, Scott notched a pair of historic efforts. The second-year speedster moved to ninth all-time in the 110-hurdles after finishing fourth in the finals with a time of 14.75. He also jumped to 10th in program history in the 400-hurdles after clocking in at 55.77 on Friday.
Meanwhile, the distance runners also pieced together a sensational showing during the meet. Capping things off on Saturday, the Captains established a new program record in the 4x1500. Together,
Austin Conway,
Billy Rabil,
Daniel Read, and
Zach Campbell teamed up to finish fifth overall with a time of 16:03.41. That standard cut nearly 12 seconds off the previous record, which was established in 2015.
On Friday, Campbell and
Jeff Dover also made history in the 1500. Campbell registered a time of 3:56.80, which moved him to sixth in CNU history. Dover also threw down a 4:00.58 clocking, which ranks ninth all-time. Equally impressive,
Evan Fabish vaulted up the charts in the 3000-steeplechase after crossing the line in 9:32.49, which stands fourth in school history.
Rounding out the men's all-time efforts,
Grayson Reid and
JJ LaPointe both excelled in the 5000. Reid finished third overall with a time of 15:16.32, while LaPointe was up next in 15:19.57. Those clockings rank eighth and ninth in program history, respectively.
On the women's side,
Briana Stewart and
Emmie Schmitt pieced together historic runs. Stewart posted a time of 4:47.86 in the 1500, while Schmitt completed the 5000 in 18:29.93. Both of those standards rank fifth in program history. Meanwhile,
Lyzan Rashid also added an all-time effort in the hammer on Thursday evening as the senior fired a 41.55-meter throw. That stands seventh at CNU.
Also making history on Saturday, the Captains competed in the women's 4x1500 for the first time. In the inaugural race, Stewart,
Abigail May,
Logan Harrington, and
Alexa Tabackman completed the event in 19:56.63, which set the standard for future foursomes.
Christopher Newport will return to action on April 9 when the Captains take part in the North Carolina A&T Invitational in Greensboro, North Carolina.
