Day 1 Results
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport track & field teams wrapped up the first day of the New Captains Classic & Combined Events with several historic efforts on Friday evening at POMOCO Stadium.
Leading the way,
Robert Graham broke his own school record in the hammer throw with a distance of 51.17 meters. That edged his previous standard of 51.10 set earlier this season. Meanwhile,
Legend Boyesen also added a 44.33-meter heave in the event, which places him eighth on the program's all-time list.
On the women's side, the Captains also benefited from several top-flight efforts in the hammer.
Lyzan Rashid finished sixth overall with a distance of 40.04 meters.
Hannah Shoemaker also added a 38.00-meter throw, which moves her up to ninth on CNU's all-time performance list.
Along with the throwers,
Briana Stewart won the 5000 in 19:33.57. She was followed closely by four of her teammates as
Alexa Tabackman,
Logan Harrington,
Emmie Schmitt, and
Abigail May all finished a fraction of a second later to round out the top-five. Equally bunched on the men's side,
Sam Murch placed third in the 5000 with a time of 15:50.52, while 13 other Captains finished within a second of that clocking.
Jennifer Westerholm also kicked off the heptathlon with a solid showing on Friday as she currently leads the combined event with a score of 2,545. She posted the top time in the 100-hurdles with a 15.57 clocking and added the second-best effort in the high jump after eclipsing 1.56 meters. She rounded out her day with a time of 26.84 in the 200 and a 7.44-meter distance in the shot put.
In addition to Westerholm,
Briana Sutton currently stands fifth in the heptathlon with a score of 2,317, while
Hannah Bowden is eighth with 2,235 points. Sutton's finest effort came in the shot put when she won the discipline with a 10.77-meter toss. Meanwhile, Bowden finished fifth in both the 100-hurdles and high jump.
CNU will return to the track tomorrow for the final day of the New Captains Classic. Action gets underway at 11 a.m. at POMOCO Stadium.
