FAIRFAX, Va. -- After all scheduled play was canceled on Saturday, the Christopher Newport women's tennis team played two mock duals on Sunday as part of the 2015 George Mason Fall Invite, defeating Howard University before falling to the host Patriots. Sophomores
McKinney Harwood,
Claire Dockrill and junior
Logan Eldridge led the way with three wins in the season opener.
Due to the weather impacting the tournament, all matches were played in an eight-game pro set format.
Harwood, playing at the top singles position, posted a pair of wins against Division I opponents and was the only CNU player to take down two in singles play. First, she toppled Stacey Roheman from Howard, 8-5, and then captured an 8-6 win over George Mason's Brittany Pilkington. In doubles action, she paired with
Alexandra Drye for an 8-5 win over Roheman and Umarah Mughnee of Howard.
Claire Dockrill and
Logan Eldridge also captured wins in singles play against the Bison, and then combined to sweep their doubles matches. Playing at No. 3 doubles, the CNU tandem beat Ashley Garner and Margie Funches, 8-2, and then took down Nicole Haigwood and Marijke Boers from George Mason in a tight match, 8-7.
CNU swept the doubles action against Howard and nearly rolled through singles as well, dropping just one match.
Kate Huck captured an 8-0 win over Garner at No. 4, while she paired with
Katie Carlson for an 8-3 win in doubles.
The final win of the day came in singles play against the Patriots, as sophomore
Emily Morgan got by Alexandra Rusyniak in an 8-3 win.
The Captains will return to action this weekend as they host the 2015 Captains Invitational.
