CNU Women's Tennis Wraps Up Appearance at 2025 ITA Southeast Regionals

Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Christopher Newport sophomore Kendal Chang played into the quarterfinals of the ITA Southeast Regional Championships to highlight the weekend's action for the Captains.Chang became the first CNU player since Johanna Ranta-aho in 2018 to advance to the quarterfinals of the championship draw at the ITA Regional Championships.

In addition to Chang's heroics, which included two wins over seeded competitors in the event, the Captains also advanced two doubles tandems to the Round of 16 in the championship draw. Chang paired with Samantha Robertson before falling to the fifth-seeded partnership from Washington and Lee while Lindsey Bergelin and Kylie Schaefer appeared in Sunday's Round of 16 against #9 Claire Loftus and Sahana Madala from Johns Hopkins.

Though both pairs suffered losses on Sunday, the Captains got a pair of wins in the consolation bracket from Emma Carver and Erin Gross. First, the CNU tandem won, 6-3, against Kathryn Colclough and Sophia Rhazali from Franklin & Marshall before Gross and Carver added a second win on the day with a thrilling 8-7 (7-5) win against Mary Washington's Jacey Copeland and Isabella Rotaru.

But the feat of the day belonged to Chang, who entered the day having already toppled the #3 seeded player from Carnegie Mellon on Saturday. In the Round of 16 on Sunday, she outlasted the #9-seed, Claire Loftus, from Johns Hopkins to capture a 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7) win and advance to the quarters. In her final matchup, the #8-seed Lia Melvin, also from Hopkins, ended the magical run by the CNU sophomore with a 6-2, 6-4 win.

In other singles matchups in the championship draw, the Captains got a consolation win from Emma Carver, downing Virginia Wesleyan's Tuva Flink by a score of 8-3. Kylie Schaefer saw her run end on the second day despite a valiant effort against top-seeded Shelly Zinchenko from Carnegie Mellon. Schaefer won the first set but ultimately fell, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-1).

In the B2 and B3 draws, a CNU player won two matches and advanced to the semifinals of both flights. In the B2 draw, sophomore Nathalie Lanne defeated Salisbury's Evelyn Whiteside, 8-4, and Dickinson College's Merve Uyumazturk, 8-3, to reach the semifinals. In the B3 draw, Sophia Dadley won her first by a walkover due to injury and captured a quarterfinal win against Lynchburg's Ashley Hair, 8-5.

CNU will compete in one more event this fall, appearing in the Hampton Mock Dual Invite on November 1-2.
