FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Highlighting another strong overall performance for the Captains on Sunday at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships, a pair of Christopher Newport women's tennis stars will compete in the semifinals of the doubles draw on Monday.
Anna Bong paired with
Kendal Chang to win twice on Saturday and advanced to the semifinal round set for 9:00 a.m. on Monday.
Bong and Chang started the day with a hard-fought win against #9-seed Isabelle Emmanuel and Lia Melvin (Johns Hopkins), 8-6. The CNU tandem then breezed through a quarterfinal matchup against Sophia Broomall and Brianna Stewart (Mary Washington), 8-1.
They were the first tandem to qualify for the quarterfinals since Raine Weis and
Tessa Trate accomplished the feat in 2023 and become the first ever partnership to advance to the semifinals in the championship bracket.
In Monday's semifinals, Bong and Chang will compete against Johns Hopkins' Rachel Li and Shelly Zinchenko starting at 9:00 a.m. The winners will compete immediately following in the championship at approximately 11:00 a.m.
Lindsey Bergelin and
Emma Carver also captured one win in the doubles bracket when they upset #9-seed Claire De Donder and Erin Li (Swarthmore) in the Round of 16. The CNU duo outlasted De Donder and Li by a final score of 8-7 (8-6). The Captains would then fall in the quarterfinal round to Ahona Chowdhury and Maya Diyasheva (Carnegie Mellon), 8-3.
In singles action,
Kylie Schaefer bowed out of the championship draw in the quarterfinal round against #2-seed Shelly Zinchenko from Johns Hopkins University. Zinchenko played into the finals on Saturday as Schaefer suffered a 6-3, 6-0 loss to the Blue Jay.
Samantha Robertson bounced back for an 8-5 win against Maya Stilling (Swarthmore) in the consolation of the Blue 1 singles bracket. She then dropped an 8-4 decision to Jacey Copeland (Mary Washington) to wrap up her weekend singles performance. In the Blue 2 singles bracket,
Nathalie Lanne concluded her weekend with an 8-6 setback to Lorena Saavedra (Franklin & Marshall).
