NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's tennis team opened up their final weekend of fall competition on Friday with a mock dual against NCAA Division I George Washington University. The Captains got a marquee victory at No. 1 doubles where
Anna Bong and
Kendal Chang, alternates for the ITA Cup, picked up a 6-2 win.
CNU had a host of close scores in the battle against the DI foe, including picking up at least two games in each of the nine total matches played.
In doubles, Bong and Chang paired up to take down Madison Lee and Karen Verduzco by a final score of 6-2. The duo improves to 5-1 so far this season with their second win against a Division I pairing. The other two bouts went in favor of the Buff & Blue. At No. 2,
Molly Miller and
Kylie Schaefer battled before ultimately falling, 6-4, Victoria Sasinka and Solange Skeene. The final CNU pairing of
Lindsey Bergelin and
Samantha Robertson surrendered a 6-2 verdict to Devika Manu and Laziza Talipova.
The singles bouts were all won by the visitors despite valiant effort by the CNU troop. Both Chang and Robertson earned first set victories in their head-to-head battles while Bergelin collected seven game wins in her setback to Sasinka. Chang took on Lee and fell by a final count of 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (2) and Robertson was outlasted in a 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (4) duel against Talipova.
