FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Making history for the Christopher Newport women's tennis team this weekend, Christopher Newport junior Kendal Chang and sophomore transfer Anna Bong became the first ever doubles team to advance to the semifinals of the championship draw at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships.

On Monday, Bong and Chang battled against Carnegie Mellon's Shelly Zinchenko and Rachel Li before ultimately dropping a hard-fought match, 8-6, to the eventual runner up of this year's ITA Regional event. 

Last season, Zinchenko and Li combined to go 10-6 together while playing at No. 3 doubles. This year, the juniors were seeded #4 in the regional event. The Captains' duo was seeded #5 and capped off the event with an impressive 3-1 effort in the championship draw. 

The Captains were the first pair to qualify for the quarterfinals since Raine Weis and Tessa Trate accomplished the feat in 2023. They earned wins against Mary Washington in the quarterfinals, 8-1, and Johns Hopkins in the Round of 16, 8-6. The tournament run started on Saturday with an 8-5 victory against a Swarthmore pair. 

Christopher Newport will close out the fall portion of the season with an appearance at the October Mock Invite on October 23-24.
