Chang, Schaefer Lead CNU Women's Tennis On Opening Day of ITA Southeast Regionals

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Advancing to the Round of 16 in both singles and doubles, Christopher Newport junior Kylie Schaefer and sophomore Kendal Chang led the Captains' overall performance on the opening day of the 2025 ITA Southeast Regional Championships. 

Playing with partner Lindsey Bergelin, Schaefer was seeded fifth in the championship draw of the ITA Southeast Doubles Championship and earned a first-round bye. The duo then slipped by Washington and Lee tandem Annie Jennings and Greer Webb, 8-6, to earn their berth into the Round of 16. Returning to the court at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, the CNU tandem will face No. 9 seed Clair Loftus and Sahana Madala from Johns Hopkins. 

Like their teammates, Chand and playing parner Samantha Robertson earned a first-round bye beforefacing Swarthmore's Riya Rao and Madeline Posner in the Round of 32. Earning an 8-4 win, Robertson and Chang will next face Washington and Lee's fifth-seeded partnership of Grace Lorenz and Sarah Donnelly. 

In other doubles matches, Scarlett Gamez and Sophia Dadley suffered a 6-2 setback to a Johns Hopkins pair, Erin Gross and Emma Carver fell 6-2 against a Haverford couple, and Nathalie Lanne played with Eva Taylor in a 6-2 setback against Franklin & Marshall. 

Schaefer, seeded ninth, earned two singles wins on the day and will play in the championship draw Round of 16 on Sunday. She disposed of Lebanon Valley's Sarah McComas, 8-5, in the opening round, before outlasting Franklin and Marshall's Natalie Untermeyer in a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (6) final. She will take on top-seeded Shelly Zinchenko from Carnegie Mellon in Sunday morning's matchup. 

Chang also picked up two wins, dropping Swarthmore's Uma Pogrebivsky, 8-2, before earning a marquee win in the Round of 32. The CNU sophomore took down Carnegie Mellon's third-seeded Ancele Dolensek in a narrow tiebreak win. Chang won 2-6, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (8) and will next face ninth-seeded Claire Loftus from Johns Hopkins. 

Eva Taylor captured one win on Saturday before falling in the Round of 32. She earned an 8-3 victory against Moravian's Leah Zolotareva before dropping a 6-1, 6-1 decision to ninth-seeded Divya Venkatarama. 

Playing in the B2 draw, Nathalie Lanne captured an 8-4 win against Salisbury's Evelyn Whiteside. Sophia Dadley is slated to take on an opponent from Stevens, Julia Chiovitti, in the B3 draw on Sunday afternoon.
