Four CNU Women's Tennis Players Selected All-State by the Virginia Sports Information Directors

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The 2024-25 All-State awards for women's tennis have been released from the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID), listing four Christopher Newport players among those honored this season. Three of the four CNU players were recognized in both singles and doubles as Raine Weis and Kylie Schaefer headlined the grouping with first team honors in both disciplines. Rookie Kendal Chang earned second team All-State accolades in singles and doubles, alongside playing partner Samantha Robertson

Weis, the 2025 Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Doubles Team of the Year, and Scholar-Athlete of the Year, concluded her career the most decorated player in program history with her fourth consecutive All-State sweep in both singles and doubles. Schaefer earned her second All-State singles certificate and first in pairs play while Chang and Robertson were honored for the first time in their careers.

It marks the first time since 2017 that four CNU players earned All-State honors from the organization when Johanna Ranta-aho, Claire Dockrill, McKinney Harwood, and Alexandra Drye each earned the certificate.

For Weis, it is the third time in four seasons that she has earned first team All-State accolades in both singles and doubles. The three-time Conference Player of the Year is a two-time Doubles Team of the Year selection as well and became the first student-athlete to qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship three or more times in her career. She also was a history-making pairs player, becoming half of the first tandem to qualify for nationals and returning to the prestigious event three times.

Weis wrapped up her illustrious career with 55 career singles wins, ranking fifth all-time, and 65 career doubles victories, second most all-time. This season, the senior from Ashland, Va. won 18 matches including 15 at No. 1 singles while also piling up 17 doubles wins with Schaefer as her partner.

Schaefer and Weis reached the NCAA Division III Doubles Championship and paired up for a standout season leading the Captains in tandem play. Schaefer also ranked second on the team in singles wins with 15 while playing primarily at No. 2. She notched 11 wins at No. 2 singles in her second year and served as an alternate at the NCAA Singles National Championship.

On the second team All-State list, rookie Kendal Chang hauled in a singles and doubles pick after her strong first season. Chang was a first team All-Conference pick in singles and earned second team All-League honors with her partner Samantha Robertson. Robertson and Chang were 10-5 at No. 2 doubles and helped CNU record a winning percentage over 65 percent in doubles play during head-to-head matchups. In singles, Chang was the only rookie to earn first team All-Conference honors in singles play and tied for second on the team with 15 wins.

CNU closed out hte year ranked No. 31 in the nation after capturing the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championship for a second straight year. CNU was 13-7 overall in the 2024-25 season.
