Schedule / Live Results

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Seven Captains will represent the Christopher Newport track & field program at the upcoming NCAA Outdoor Championships after officially qualifying for the three-day national meet, which will be hosted by Ohio Wesleyan at Gauthier Track beginning on Thursday.

The women will send five contenders to the nationals. Enuma Ezenwa and Jennifer Westerholm will represent CNU in the heptathlon, while Jessica McClelland and Logan Harrington qualified in distance events. McClelland will compete in the 1500, and Harrington will run the 800. Additionally, the foursome of Ezenwa, Westerholm, Harrington, and Leah Richardson qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 4x400-relay.

On the men's side, Richard Roethel earned his spot in the decathlon, and Dominique Torres will compete in the triple jump for the second straight year.

Overall, the seven representatives are the most from CNU at the NCAA Championships since 2008.

Entering the competition, Roethel is the highest-ranked Captain on the national performance lists after posting the NCAA's fourth-highest score in the decathlon. The senior recorded 6,723 points during the New Captains Classic, which is only 172 shy of the top mark in the country this season. A three-time All-American in the decathlon, he has finished seventh or higher at the NCAA Championships during each of his previous three appearances.

Torres also comes in ranked among the top-10 nationally in the triple jump. An All-American in the event during the indoor season, he currently sits eighth nationally in the outdoor discipline. During the CAC Championships, he notched a distance of 14.65 meters, which earned him the conference title and a spot in the NCAA meet. Last year, during his freshman season, he placed 13th at the national competition.

On the women's side, McClelland headlines the group after earning a berth in the 1500. An 18-time All-Conference selection during her decorated career, the senior speedster will be making her first appearance at the NCAA Championships. She enters the meet seeded ninth after crossing the line in 4:33.40 during the Swarthmore Final Qualifier. Not only did that clocking earn her a spot in the title meet, but it also set a new CNU and Capital Athletic Conference record.

Harrington also earned her spot following a record-breaking performance in the 800. Honored as the CAC Rookie of the Year, she set a new conference mark during the Salisbury Final Qualifier after finishing in 2:12.92, which places her 21st in the field at the national meet. During her first season in Newport News, she has captured both the indoor and outdoor CAC 800 titles and earned five All-Conference plaudits.

Returning to the nationals for the second straight year, Ezenwa is seeded 15th in the heptathlon. During the combined event, she broke her own school record with 4,491 points during the Ron Althoff Final Qualifier at Ohio Wesleyan last week. One of the most accomplished student-athletes at CNU, she captured six league championships this year, including three during the CAC outdoor meet earlier this month.

Westerholm has been sensational in the heptathlon as well and currently ranks 17th in the field in the combined event. At Ohio Wesleyan last week, she tallied 4,461 points, which stands second in program history. Making her first appearance at the NCAAs, she has been incredible throughout her sophomore year and shined at the CAC Outdoor Championships. During the title meet, she won two league crowns and tied Ezenwa for the most points at the competition with 30.5.

Richardson will also be making her first appearance at the NCAA Championships after helping lead Christopher Newport's top 4x400-relay unit. The program's most accomplished sprinter this year, she ranks among the top-50 nationally in both the 200 and 400. Along with her individual efforts, she teamed with Westerholm, Ezenwa, and Harrington to post a time of 3:51.55 during the Virginia Challenge, which established a new CAC record in the relay.

Roethel, Ezenwa, and Westerholm will compete in the combined events on Thursday and Friday. The preliminaries for the 4x400 and 1500 will take place on Thursday, while qualifying for the 800 finals is scheduled for Friday. Finals for all individual events, including the triple jump, will take place on Saturday.
