DEMOREST, Ga. -- Senior midfielder
Annemarie Weaver scored both goals as the Captains surged past Piedmont College (12-5-1, 5-4-1) on Sunday, 2-0. The Captains got over .500 for the first time in 2012, improving to 9-8 overall with a 7-3 record against USA South competition.
The Captains controlled play from the start, holding the home team to just one shot in the first 29 minutes of action. In that same span, CNU pressured the Lions keeper, Marjorie Hammond, time and time again. The team took nine shots, putting five on-goal, including Weaver's first goal in the 29th minute.
CNU took back-to-back shots by
Emma O'Reilly and
Chelsea Wolfe, turned away by Hammond, but setting up a corner kick by senior midfielder
Dani Gunderson. Weaver got a head on the corner and found the back of the net for what would prove to be the eventual gamewinner.
Hammond was forced to make three more saves in the final 15 minutes of the first half, as CNU continued to pressure the Piedmont defense heading into the break. Gunderson led the charge, taking two shots on-goal.
After halftime, the Captains offense again opened with a flurry of shots, as Weaver and Wolfe combined for three more shots on-frame in the first 15 minutes. Piedmont answered this time, as Emily Corsin put one shot on-goal, but CNU senior keeper
Meghan Gumbs was up to the task. She faced just six total shots in the game, with one on-frame.
Then, with less than 19 minutes remaining in the game, Weaver again used her leaping ability on a corner kick to give CNU an insurance goal. This time, Wolfe took the kick and Weaver headed in the score, her second of the afternoon. The assist gives Wolfe eight on the season, a new CNU freshman record.
The Captains offense outshot the Lions, 20-6, with 13 attempts on-goal. Hammond finished with 11 saves and two goals allowed.
CNU is currently in fourth place in the USA South, with the top four teams all earning a home game in the conference tournament quarterfinals this Saturday. The Captains will travel to Mary Baldwin for the regular season finale on Wednesday, October 24 at 4:00 pm.
