Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's baseball squad powered its way past USA South rival Averett, 12-0, in seven innings Saturday afternoon at Captains Park.
CNU scored four times in the first inning, highlighted by Chris Despins towering three-run homer to straight away center that put the Captains on top, 4-0, after one full inning of play.
Christopher Newport scored once in the third and sixth innings, two in the fifth and four in the seventh, to take the win by slaughter rule.
Despins finished 4-for-4 with four RBI and four runs scored. Trae Bailey finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, Alex Owen was 2-for-3 and Eric Cole and Parker Neal both finished 2-for-4 with a run driven in and a run scored.
Matt McDaniel and Mike Giarrizzi each finished with one hit.
Kenny Moreland broke Mike Cosby's record for career wins as the senior hurler picked up win number 26 for his career. Moreland tossed a complete game, allowed just four hits, walked two and struck out nine. He's now 26-9.
The Cougars fall to 7-11 overall and 0-3 in the USA South. The Captains are now 8-3 on the year and 2-1 in conference play. The two teams conclude their two-game series Sunday with first pitch set for 1 pm.
