NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's volleyball team won its first match before falling in five games to Washington & Lee in the final of the CNU Invitational, snapping the team's 20-match winning streak Saturday evening.
The Captains defeated West Virginia Wesleyan in the team's first match of the day for its 20th straight win to finish pool play. CNU won by scores of 30-27, 30-20, and 30-21.
Allie Wolfe led the way with 16 kills. Ellen Koch finished with 11 kills. Christie Kirby had a game-high 20 digs as Brittany Collins added 39 assists.
In the championship match, Washington & Lee won 3-2 by scores of 30-32, 30-25, 31-33, 32-30 and 15-6.
Wolfe again led the way with 20 kills, she also had 21 digs. Liz Bush finished with 14 kills and Koch contributed 12 kills.
Collins added 56 assists, five kills and 21 digs. Kirby finished with 35 digs, Mary Horner had 24 digs, and Sarah Coffey posted 16 digs.
W&L's Jessica Ulrich was named the tournament's MVP. She was joined on the All-Tournament Team by W&L's Laura Maurer and Rachel Phillips. CNU's Brittany Collins and Allie Wolfe, Gallaudet's Shana Lehmann, Elizabethtown's Kelly Downs, VA Wesleyan's Grace Geralds and West Virginia Wesleyan's Caitlyn Smyth were also named All-Tournament.
Christopher Newport is now 21-6 on the year. The Captains return to action Wednesday when they head to NC Wesleyan with start time set for 6:30 pm.
