CNU Men's Golf Wraps Up Tiger Invitational With Top Ten Finish

PINEHURST, N.C. -- Wrapping up the second tournament of the Spring season with a top-ten finish, the Christopher Newport men's golf team fired a 28-over 892 (298-301-293) at the Tiger Invitational. The Captains saved the best round for last with a five-over 293 in the third round on Tuesday. 

A pair of Eagles highlighted Tuesday's final round performance by the Captains as Nick Alexander (+2) and Fischer Leggitt (+8) each dropped in three's on the 540-yard par five third hole. Patrick O'Rourke (+7) rounded out the 54-hole event with a team-high nine birdies including four in Monday's second round while dropping in three more on Tuesday. 

On the individual leaderboard, Alexander tied for 24th in the 100-player field with a two-over 218 (73-74-71). After finishing the first day at three-over par with a one-over 73 in the first round and a two-over 74 in the second, the CNU veteran fired his fifth round at par or better this year with a one-under 71 on Tuesday. The eagle highlighted the day while he also birdied the 549-yard par five ninth and the 515-yard par five 18th holes. 

O'Rourke, tied for 47th, and Leggitt, tied for 49th, were separated by just one stroke after three rounds. O'Rourke shot a 223 (74-76-73) and Leggitt carded a 224 (75-74-75). It was Leggitt's first ever 54-hole tournament and a top-five performance for the year by a Captain. Leggitt's second round included 15 pars and he finished the event with 38 over 54 holes of action. O'Rourke posted the best nine-hole performance of the tournament for CNU with a one-under 35 on the front nine Tuesday. He birdied the third and dropped in par putts on the other eight holes. 

Nathan Smith (+11) and Jacob Foti (+21) rounded out the CNU performances in the tournament. Smith finished 62nd and Foti in 92nd overall. Both players closed out the week with five birdies. 

CNU tied with Oglethorpe University, ranked seventh in the nation, on the team leaderboard. Methodist (-13) pulled away for the team win while Emory's Kevin Mu (-10) captured medalist honors.

Next up for the Captains is another 54-hole event over three days in Georgia from March 20-22. CNU will compete at the Jekyll Island Intercollegiate.
