WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Representing the Christopher Newport track & field program on the opening day of the Camel City Sprints & Distance Festival, Ellie Nuckols made the most of her appearance as the third-year star excelled in the 60-hurdles and long jump at the JDL Fast-Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

The lone Captain to compete on Friday, Nuckols faced a busy schedule with both of her events beginning at 1 p.m. Kicking things off, the All-Region standout completed the 60-hurdles in 9.28, which was the top performance by a Division III competitor at the meet. It also marked her second-fastest clocking of the year.

With little down time, Nuckols quickly bounced back with an appearance in the long jump. Competing in the second flight, she opened the action with a 5.25-meter leap. That was also the top effort by a Division III athlete on Friday.

Eventually, Nuckols placed 22nd overall in the long jump and 24th in the hurdles at the prestigious meet. Putting the level of competition into perspective, the hurdles were eventually won by Skyla Wilson, who has represented Duke, Miami, and Penn at the NCAA Division I National Championships, while the long jump was claimed by Wake Forest's Annie Thorkéll, who is a world-ranked competitor out of Sweden.

Friday's appearance continued an outstanding junior season for Nuckols. Last week at the Patriot Games, she posted a score of 3,223 in the pentathlon, which ranks 16th on the NCAA charts this year. The reigning Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Field Athlete of the Week also slots 49th nationally in the long jump. In that event, she threw down a season-best mark of 5.43 meters at the VMI Team Challenge last month.

Christopher Newport will continue the Camel City Sprints & Distance Festival on Saturday before returning home for the Vince Brown Invitational on Sunday.
