FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- After starring for the Christopher Newport track & field program at the Shane Stevens Invitational on Saturday, Kayla Asprey and Ben Varner swept the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Field Athlete of the Week honors, while Sarah Dake was named the Women's Track Athlete of the Week.

The weekly award was the first for both Asprey and Varner. Meanwhile, Dake picked up her third honor of the year and her first in track & field. During the fall, she was named the league's Cross Country Athlete of the Week on September 2 and October 6.

Piecing together an award-winning freshman campaign, Asprey took over the top spot on the league leaderboard in the shot put on Saturday. During her second outing of the season, the first-year phenom uncorked an 11.80-meter heave. That placed her second in the field and vaulted her to ninth on the program's all-time performance list. It also marked the top effort in the conference this year by over three feet.

In addition to her work in the shot put, Asprey also ranks sixth in the league in the weight throw after posting an 11.60-meter distance at the Holiday Open in December.

Equally impressive on the track, Dake registered a pair of victories during the Shane Stevens Invitational over the weekend. Kicking off the competition, she captured the mile in 5:16.45, which was the eighth-fastest time in program history and sliced four seconds off her previous PR. Later, she added another triumph in the 800 after crossing in 2:26.60. That marked the top time in the league this year and shaved three seconds off her personal-best.

One of the top competitors in the conference, Dake also boasts the league's fastest time in the 5000 (18:13.68) while sitting second in the 3000 (10:22.77).

Rounding out the award-winners, Varner shined in the throwing events on the men's side. During the competition, he won the weight throw with a 15.05-meter missile. That beat the second-place finisher by nearly four feet and was the fourth-longest throw of his career. He also established a new PR in the shot put with a 13.70-meter toss. That added over a foot to his previous standard and was the fifth-longest throw in the league this year.

Along with his work over the weekend, Varner was the runner-up in the weight throw during his first two appearances of the year. His 15.52-meter effort at the Holiday Open still ranks second on the league leaderboard.

Christopher Newport will return to action on Friday with the start of the Virginia Wesleyan Invitational at the Virginia Beach Sports Center and the Patriot Games at the George Mason Field House.
