NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- For the second straight week, the Christopher Newport track & field teams will take part in a pair of competitions as the Captains will head to Winston-Salem, North Carolina for the Camel City Sprints & Distance Festival beginning on Friday before returning home for the Vince Brown Invitational on Sunday at the Freeman Center.
The Camel City Festival will take place at the JDL Fast-Track beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday before resuming on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Meanwhile, Sunday's home meet will open at 10 a.m.
For those fans unable to attend the action-packed weekend, live results will be available for both competitions. Live video will also be available for the Vince Brown Invitational. Direct links to all of those features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
CNU will send a select group of 13 student-athletes to the JDL Fast-Track for a two-day meet featuring some of the top competitors in the country. Currently, nearly 50 other colleges are scheduled to take part in the Camel City Sprints & Distance Festival, including standout programs from all three levels of the NCAA.
Among the Captains currently entered in that competition,
Ellie Nuckols is slated for three events, including the women's DMR alongside
Courtney Mudd,
Danielle Hollington, and
Sarah Bland.
Ashley Eley and
D'yan Robinson are also scheduled to make an appearance in the triple jump,
Sarah Dake is entered in the 5000, and
Kayla Asprey is in the shot put.
On the men's side, distance standouts
Andrew Janetsky,
Clayton Rankin, and
Luke Tompkins are expected to make the trip to North Carolina, while
Seth Morris and
Daniel Young are looking to take part in the shot put.
On Sunday, Christopher Newport will have a full contingent of competitors at the Vince Brown Invitational. Currently, nearly 70 Captains are entered in at least one event. Among those, Hollington,
Bailey Billger, and
Annaka Busenlehner are all registered in at least three disciplines apiece on the women's side, while
Jahi Jemison is slated for four events for the men.
Jemison is coming off of an award-winning appearance at the Patriot Games last week. During the competition, the sophomore posted a score of 4,324 in the heptathlon, which moved him to 38th on the national charts. For that performance, he was named the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week.
Not to be outdone, Nuckols earned the same award on the women's side after jumping to 16th nationally in the pentathlon with a score of 3,223. Eley also climbed to 32nd on the NCAA leaderboard in the combined event after setting a new personal-best with 3,001 points.
In addition to the standouts at the Patriot Games last week, CNU also registered six wins during the Marlins Invitational on Friday. Among the victors, Dake and Janetsky swept the 3000, while
Evan Young captured the 5000. Additionally,
Trent Snyder placed first in the men's pole vault, Asprey claimed the crown in the women's shot put, and the foursome of Hollington, Bland, Mudd, and
Sydney Chipperfield ran away with the 4x400-relay.
After Sunday's competition, Christopher Newport will remain at home for the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Championships, which will be hosted at the Freeman Center beginning on February 20.
