WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- On the final day of the Camel City Sprints & Distance Festival, the Christopher Newport women's distance medley relay shattered the school record and vaulted up the national leaderboard with a historic performance on Saturday at the JDL Fast-Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
In the DMR,
Courtney Mudd,
Danielle Hollington,
Ellie Nuckols, and
Sarah Bland stole the show while winning the event in 12:21.01. That obliterated the previous program standard of 12:36.75, which was set by the Captains at the same facility on January 26, 2024.
Mudd and Nuckols were holdovers from the previous record-setting foursome, while Hollington and Bland joined the crew to establish the new benchmark. During the race, Mudd completed the first 1200 meters in 3:48.50, which cut two seconds off her leg from the 2024 relay.
Taking over for the next 400 meters, Hollington burned up the track in 58.87 before Nuckols finished the 800-meter leg in 2:19.93. That sliced six seconds off her effort from two years ago.
Rounding out the group, Bland ran the anchor leg and wrapped up the final 1600 meters in 5:13.71. Incredibly, each of the four legs posted faster times than the 2024 collective. While Mudd and Nuckols both eclipsed their own clockings from the previous DMR, Hollington and Bland bested the work of former legends
Sydney Trussell and Eliza Dana from two years ago.
Overall, their time of 12:21.01 vaulted them to fifth on the national leaderboard, only trailing foursomes from Johns Hopkins, Misericordia, Haverford, and Hope.
In addition to the women's DMR,
Sarah Dake also made history on Saturday. In the 5000, she established a new personal-best after finishing fifth in 18:08.20. The cut five seconds off her old PR and marked the third-fastest time in program history.
Following her work on the relay, Bland came back and rounded out her epic day with a time of 5:18.90 in the mile. In other events on the women's side,
Kayla Asprey just missed matching her personal-best effort with a 12.50-meter launch in the shot put, while
Ashley Eley and
D'yan Robinson both finished in the top-20 in the triple jump. Eley placed 11th in the field with an 11.04-meter leap, while Robinson finished 16th after landing a distance of 10.77 meters.
On the men's side, Christopher Newport parked a pair of throwers in the top-10 in the shot put.
Daniel Young led the contingent with a seventh-place showing after uncorking a 15.37-meter missile. Meanwhile,
Seth Morris was ninth with a 15.00-meter heave.
The Captains also had three distance runners take part in the men's half of the meet.
Clayton Rankin led all Division III runners in the 5000 with a time of 15:16.41. Additionally, in the mile,
Andrew Janetsky clocked in at 4:33.50, while
Luke Tompkins crossed the line in 4:35.01.
CNU will continue its busy weekend on Sunday with the Vince Brown Invitational at the Freeman Center.
