NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport senior
Hailey Kellogg was named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Monday as the Captains earned the top-seed in this week's conference tournament. Kellogg helped CNU close out the regular season on a six-game winning streak with a pair of wins over Virginia-Lynchburg and Mary Washington during the week.
Against the Eagles in the regular season finale, Kellogg put together one of the grittiest performances for the Captains since head coach
Bill Broderick took the helm in 2013-14. With the team saddled with injuries limiting participation, Kellogg played in 38 minutes to set a record for the most minutes in a 40-minute game under Broderick's tutelage. It was the most minutes played in a regulation contest since March 19, 2011 when Chelsie Schweers concluded her career with a 40-minute affair.
Not only was she on the floor, but she produced. Kellogg poured in a career-high 18 points to help lift CNU over the Eagles. She finished the game 6-for-12 from the floor and added a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the final two minutes to help CNU pull away for a double-digit lead. In addition to her career-best scoring performance, Kellogg added three assists, a rebound, and two steals in the win.
Earlier in the week, Kellogg also played 15 minutes against Virginia-Lynchburg and scored four points with four rebounds and three assists. For the week, she averaged 11.0 points, 3.0 assists, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.0 steals per game in helping the Captains conclude the regular season with a 21-4 overall record.
Kellogg ranks 13th among active players with 111 career games played while making 48 starts. She has averaged 18.9 minutes per game over the course of her career including the only player to average over 20 minutes per contest in each of the last three seasons. This season, she ranks 10th in Division III in assist-to-turnover ratio with a 2.28 mark and has dished out a career-high 91 assists.
The senior guard is the second straight and fifth overall Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week this season. Five different CNU players have garnered the recognition as Kellogg joins
Madison McKenzie (Nov 24),
Sarah Pritz (Dec 1),
Jessica Dornak (Dec 22), and
McKenna Snively (Feb 16).
