NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- All 15 players got into the scoring column in a dominant victory over Virginia University of Lynchburg (4-14) on Tuesday night as the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team never trailed against the Dragons for a 94-55 win in the home finale. The Captains improved to 20-4, capturing a 20-win season for the tenth consecutive year and the 18th time in the last 19 seasons.
CNU registered the highest team shooting percentage of the season in the win as the Captains combined to shoot 47.9 percent (34-71). That mark included another 13 makes from beyond the arc as the three-point shooting late in the season has caught fire with Christopher Newport burying 10 or more three's in each of the last three games.
With the win, the Captains seniors --
Hailey Kellogg and
McKenna Snively -- improve to 104-9 over their four-year tenure in the Royal Blue and Silver. That is a winning percentage of over 92 percent and ranks third all-time for a senior class while also tying for sixth all-time in career victories. More impressively, the duo have only lost two games at home as their final game in the Freeman Center ran their overall record to 46-2 (.958). That mark is the fourth best record by a senior class at the Freeman Center since the building opened in 2000-01.
Putting a fitting punctuation mark to their careers at home, both Snively and Kellogg contributed mightily in the well-balanced team performance on Tuesday. Snively knocked down a pair of three-pointers and moved past Kelly Halverson (2009-13) on the career chart at CNU with 117 made triples. She now has in her sights Anitra Thomas, with 119, and Kinsey Pritchett, with 120, heading into the final game of the regular season this week. Kellogg continued her sensational senior season protecting the basketball with three assists and no turnovers while adding four points and four rebounds in 15 minutes of action.
The veteran tandem were merely a part of the offensive show entertaining fans with crisp ball movement and excellent shot selection throughout the game against the Dragons. CNU connected on 34 field goals in the game and were credited with 29 assists -- a season-high and the most since recording 31 against North Carolina Wesleyan on December 9, 2024. The effort was anchored in team passing with no single player logging more than four dimes while 12 CNU players registered at least one assist.
Elizabeth Creed,
Hazel Grepps, and
Caitlin Crump each had four helpers to lead the way for the offense.
On the receiving end of those passes were a host of CNU offensive players. Four Captains finished in double figures with junior transfer
Kendra Rigo leading the squad in scoring for a second consecutive game. Rigo poured in 12 on four made three-pointers while
Mia Wilson and
Madison McKenzie each scored 11. Grepps rounded out the quartet of double-figure scorers with 10 points on an efficient 4-for-6 effort from the field.
Grepps stuffed the stat sheet for the Captains in the win despite playing just 13 minutes. In her time on the floor, the rookie showcased her motor and eye for the basketball by hauling in a team-high seven rebounds and grabbing a team-high three steals. She added the aforementioned four assists to round out her strong showing.
The Captains jumped out to quick 12-point lead in the first quarter and never looked back. McKenzie connected on a pair of free throws before adding back-to-back three-pointers with a personal 8-1 run to turn a 12-7 lead into a 20-8 advantage. Leading by a dozen, the Captains hot shooting continued as Rigo buried a triple and Snively added one of her own to end the quarter with a flourish and take a 32-14 lead.
Virginia-Lynchburg rallied in the second quarter to trim the halftime lead to 15 at 41-26, but the Captains came out firing in the second half and quickly put the game out of reach. A 22-3 burst out of the locker room included back-to-back buckets by Kellogg to start the second half and exceptional interior passing between
Elizabeth Creed and
Jessica Dornak for two more. Crump connected from deep and Kellogg found Creed for a finish inside to take a 55-28 lead just over three minutes into the third quarter. The run continued when Grepps found Snively for a mid-range jumper that was followed by back-to-back three's from Wilson and Snively. At the end of the run, CNU led by 34 with a 63-29 advantage.
CNU had a strong second half offensively, scoring 53 points on 53.8 percent shooting (21-39). Along the , all 15 players got into the scoring column including
Denniyah Tanner with a highlight-reel slash to the basket and
Sydney Richardson finishing a pair of tough shots in the lane. Earlier in the game, fellow rookies
Kaycee Doughty (3 pts, 2 blocks) and
Lily Soller (2-2 FT, 3 reb) got into the action while
Noelle Cabiness added six points and four rebounds with a blocked shot.
The Dragons were led by 15 points from DaNiya McClure while Paris' Alana Jones added seven points and seven rebounds.
CNU will head to Mary Washington for the final game of the regular season on Saturday, February 21 with tip scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the Anderson Center. Following the regular season finale, CNU will look to defend its conference title at the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championship hosted by Salisbury University next week.
