CNU Track & Field Returns to Action on Saturday at VMI Team Challenge

Live Results

LEXINGTON, Va. --
After a lengthy winter break, the Christopher Newport track & field teams will return to action on Saturday when the Captains take part in the VMI Team Challenge, which will be held at the Corps Physical Training Facility in Lexington, Virginia.

Action gets underway at 9 a.m. with the start of the women's 5000 and shot put. For those fans unable to attend the meet, live results will be available at VMIKeydets.com. A direct link can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

Overall, 29 Captains are currently slated to take part in at least one event on Saturday. Among the competitors, 19 are scheduled to compete in multiple disciplines, including a dozen of the women.

Headlining the CNU contingent, Ashley Eley and Seth Morris are both coming off award-winning appearances during the Holiday Open in December. Morris reclaimed the school's shot put record after he unloaded a 16.45-meter heave last month. Meanwhile, Eley climbed to seventh on the program's all-time performance list in the women's high jump after eclipsing 1.59 meters.

For their efforts, the two standouts were named the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Field Athletes of the Week on December 8.

Among other historic performances last month, Sarah Dake won the 5000 in 18:13.68, which marked the third-fastest clocking in school history. Meanwhile, Ben Varner climbed to ninth on the men's weight throw list with a 15.52-meter launch.

Along with her work in the high jump at the Holiday Open, Eley also won the triple jump with an 11.32-meter leap, which ranks 10th on the national charts this year. Additionally, Morris' record-setting distance in the shot put stands fifth in the NCAA.

In other events, Eley sits 31st in the country in the high jump (1.59 meters), Morris is 35th in the weight throw (16.64 meters), and Dake is 46th in the 5000 (18:13.68). Daniel Young also slots 28th in the shot put with a 15.34-meter effort.

Following Saturday's meet, Christopher Newport will return to action on January 24 with the Shane Stevens Invitational at Bridgewater.
