Head Coach Bill Broderick Announces Addition of Madison Hagen to Coaching Staff

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport University head women's basketball coach Bill Broderick announced that Madison Hagen has joined the coaching staff as an assistant coach for the 2025-26 season. 

"I am very excited to welcome Coach Hagen to the CNU Women's Basketball family," said Broderick. "Her experience both as a player and coach will be a tremendous asset to the student-athletes in our program."

Hagen comes to Newport News after serving as an assistant coach and assistant director of operations for the University of Northern Colorado women's basketball program. She helped lead the Bears to an appearance in the Big Sky Tournament second round while earning her first collegiate coaching experience. She also served as an intern and volunteer coach under head coach Quantae Anderson at Mead High School in Washington. 

Her roles as an assistant coach included cutting and clipping practice footage, analyzing opponents, and assisting with scouting. She was a part of coaches' meetings and assisted with game plans, practice plans, and player personnel. She also was able to gain expertise and knowledge working with athletes and assisting their individual skill development. 

As a player, Hagen started her career at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and helped the squad register 18 wins including a 10-win record in the challenging WIAC during her rookie season of 2019-20. Following the CoVID-19 pandemic, she transferred home to Whitworth University where she competed for three years. She appeared in 56 career games with 12 starts and averaged over 16 minutes per game. Hagen rounded out her playing career at The Evergreen State College in 2023-24, participating in seven games before suffering a career-ending injury. 

Hagen graduated with a degree in Sports Psychology with a minor in Coaching from Whitworth University in 2024. She is working toward her Masters in Coaching and is on pace to earn her degree from Northern Colorado in 2025. 

The Captains finished the year ranked No. 14 in the WBCA Coaches Poll after posting a 26-2 overall record in 2024-25. The Captains extended a program-record nine-year postseason appearance streak under head coach Bill Broderick and captured a sixth consecutive conference championship. CNU ranked second nationally in bench scoring (43.5 ppg) and were among the highest-scoring offense int he nation with 78.3 points per game ranking 12th in Division III. In eleven seasons under Coach Broderick, CNU Women's Basketball is 308-47 with a winning percentage of 86.8 percent.
