NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
Rewriting the history books with a handful of noteworthy efforts, the Christopher Newport women's cross country squad took the team title at the CNU Invitational, while the Captains placed second during the men's race on Friday evening at Lee Hall Mansion.

The women captured the crown after posting a score of 37, which out-distanced runner-up VCU by seven. Meanwhile, on the men's side, CNU collected 62 points, which only trailed Salisbury, who won with 30.

Just two weeks after setting a new school record in the 4k at the Spider Alumni Open, Sarah Dake added another historic effort in the 6k. On Friday, the junior speedster completed the course in 22:39.69, which shaved 43 seconds off her previous PR and marked the 13th-fastest clocking in school history. It also placed her second in the field at the CNU Invitational.

Along with Dake, two other women moved up the program's all-time 6k charts. Kayla Lopez came in fifth overall while crossing in 23:21.84, which ranks 32nd in school history. Seconds later, Sarah Bland finished sixth in 23:26.30. That stands 34th on the school's all-time performance list.

Adding her own top-10 effort, Courtney Mudd was ninth in the field with a mark of 23:56.86, which shaved 16 seconds off her previous course-best time. Rounding out the team's top-seven, Isabella Phillips came in 15th overall and led all Division III freshmen with a 24:15.45 clocking, while Lena Blagg was 18th (24:18.97) and Josie Brumfield placed 25th (24:51.59).

On the men's side, Andrew Janetsky added another chapter to his storybook sophomore season. After breaking the school record in the 6k at the Spider Alumni Open, he set a new PR in the 8k on Friday. During the race, he crossed the line in 25:48.77, which moved him to 33rd on the program's all-time list. It also was the fastest mark by a Division III runner at the meet and the third-best time overall.

In addition to Janetsky, three other Captains finished in the top-20. Leading that wave, Clayton Rankin placed 13th overall in 27:13.87. Following close behind, Kevin Farnsworth was 17th in 27:43.72, and Luke Tompkins came in 19th in 27:53.52.

Also slotting in the team's top-seven, Tom Foti was 25th (28:15.65), Taylor Dalton finished 38th (29:08.63), and TJ Brown led CNU's newcomers with a time of 29:26.79, which placed him 42nd in the field.

Christopher Newport will return to action on September 27 when the Captains head to Salisbury for the Don Cathcart Invitational.
