Michael Thomas Named Academic All-District At-Large Selection for CNU Men's Golf

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Following a standout senior season from the left-handed swinger, golfer Michael Thomas has been named an Academic All-District selection by the College Sports Communicators. He becomes just the third CNU men's golfer to collect the esteemed honor joining Brian Jaeger (2013) and Aidan Baron (2024).

In order to be eligible for the selection, student-athletes must have at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA while serving as a starter or key reserve. Founded in 1952, the CSC (formerly CoSIDA) Academic All-American program recognizes standouts from all sports every year with fewer than 10 percent of those student-athletes receiving the nation's highest academic honor. In the men's at-large category, student-athletes are selected from sports including Fencing, Golf, Gymnastics, Ice Hockey, Lacrosse, Rifle, Skiing, Volleyball, Water Polo, and Wrestling.

Thomas was joined by three CNU Men's Lacrosse Captains among the honorees in 2024-25.

This season, Thomas matched his career high with five rounds at par or better and finished out his final season with a 75.6 stroke average to rank second on the team. In seven events, Thomas finished in the top-third of the leaderboard four times including a second-place finish at the Alvernia Fall Invitational. In that event, he finished second out of 55 players with a 146 (70-76) at two-over par.

He appeared in the Gate City Invitational, tying for 29th out of 90 players with a 216 (73-73-70) to wrap up the 54-hole event at Even par. It matched his career-best finish for a three-round tournament and kicked off his senior season with a hot start. Then came Alvernia, and he wrapped up the Fall slate with a 12-over 154 (75-79) at the O'Briant-Jensen Memorial tied for 30th.

Thomas wrapped up his career ranked in the top-ten all-time at Christopher Newport with a 76.1 scoring average. He played in 62 career rounds over four years and appeared in the 2023 NCAA Division III National Championship where CNU posted a program-best sixth place finish.

In the classroom, Thomas graduated with a degree in Business this May.

As a team, the Captains finished with one tournament victory and three top-five finishes in seven events played. CNU won the Alvernia Fall Invitational behind Thomas' second-place showing, while also earning a second place finish at the Hampden-Sydney Invitational and tying for third at the Kinder-Williams Invitational.
