Nick Alexander and Owen Cook Lead CNU Men's Golf at Cochran Collegiate Tournament

CORDOVA, Tenn. -- Christopher Newport finished 11th out of 18 teams at the Cochran Collegiate in Tennessee this week after 54 holes of play concluded on Tuesday. The third round saw Nick Alexander and Owen Cook both fire matching 76's to lead the way for the Captains (+76), who wrapped up the final round having moved up two spots on the team leaderboard. 

Christopher Newport trimmed one shot off their second round score for a tournament-best 312 on Tuesday and the Captains wrapped up the two-day tournament with a 940 (315-313-312). CNU missed a top ten finish by ten strokes behind Millikin while the leaders from Oglethorpe won the event with an 899. 

On the individual leaderboard, Owen Cook paced the Captains with a top-ten finish as he wrapped up a ninth-place showing on Tuesday. He fired an 11-over 227 (75-76-76) for his third top en effort in seven events this year. Nick Alexander made a huge move on Tuesday and moved up 18 spots on the individual leaderboard to finish 41st in the 90-player field with a 19-over 235 (80-79-76). 

Brian O'Dea (+21) also moved up two spots on the leaderboard and rounded out his three-round tournament 51st with a 237 (80-78-79). Michael Thomas (+25) slotted in at 65th overall with a 241 (80-80-81) and J.P. Carr (+32) rounded out the CNU performance in 82nd with a 248 (83-83-82). 

Cook matched his second round with a 76 on Tuesday and poured in 12 more pars. He added a birdie four on the 580-yard par five 16th hole and had five birdies in the 54-hole event. He also notched a team-best 35 pars over the three rounds of action. Alexander had 31 pars but saved his best round for last with a four-over 76 on Tuesday. He started the round with a birdie on the 426-yard par four 14th and added another two holes later on the 16th. Holding at one-under with four straight pars, he then went to two-under with a two on the 160-yard par three 3rd hole. Alexander finished with six more pars in the final ten holes and capped a tremendous run up the leaderboard. 

O'Dea tacked on a birdie as he played the 376-yard par four 11th and notched a run of five straight holes at par or better to close his third round. Thomas fired 12 pars in the third round including six of his first seven holes played. Carr finished strong in his final round, dropping in par putts on five of his last six holes. 

The winning individual was Nick Rubino from Hampden-Sydney College with a four-over final score. The field played three rounds at the Colonial Country Club in Memphis, Tennessee over the last two days.
