CNU Men's Golf in 13th After Two Rounds at the Cochran Collegiate in Memphis

CORDOVA, Tenn. -- Taking on a talented field on one of the top courses in Tennessee, the Christopher Newport men's golf team sits in 13th place out of 18 teams after 36 holes at the Cochran Collegiate hosted by Rhodes College. The Captains played at Colonial Country Club and were led by Owen Cook (+7) with a top-ten showing through the first two rounds. 

The Captains signed for a 52-over 628 (315-313) over the first two rounds and are currently just 29 strokes back on a congested leaderboard that is led by Babson (+23). 

Overall, Cook finished at seven-over with a 151 (75-76) and fired a three-over 75 in the first round with a four-over 76 in the secon. He recorded four birdies in the first two rounds on Monday including a pair on par fives. He birdied the 575-yard par five first hole in the opening round and added a four on the 539-yard par five seventh in the second round. Cook was two-under through his first 11 holes with an unblemished card that included two birdies and nine pars. He then finished strong in the second round with four pars and two birdies on his final six holes. After two rounds of play, Cook is in eighth place on the individual leaderboard and just five strokes back of the leader from Lynchburg, Edward Coffren (+2). 

CNU's next best first day came from Brian O'Dea (+14). The sophomore is currently tied for 53rd after a 158 (80-78) on day one. He kicked off the round with a birdie on the 425-yard par four 10th hole and added a quick second birdie three holes later on the 425-yard par four 13th. His first round featured three birdies while his second round had one. The second trip around the track was much more consistent for O'Dea with 12 pars as well. 

Just one stroke behind O'Dea came Nick Alexander (+15), currently tied for 59th on the leaderboard. He finished the day with a 159 (80-79) and a pair of birdies on the back nine during the first round. Michael Thomas (+16) and J.P. Carr (+22) rounded out the Captains performance on day one as Thomas sank a pair of birdies with 19 pars over 36 holes and Carr had 15 pars and one birdie. 

CNU will return to the course on Tuesday for the third and final round with teet imes set for 9:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. the Captains will tee off on holes 13-14-and-15 while playing with LeTourneau University and Webster University. Live scoring is available online at CNUsports.com.
