JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. -- Over the weekend, the Christopher Newport men's golf program took on a talented field of 30 teams at the Jekyll Island Collegiate and the Captains came away tied for 16th with an 889 (298-301-290). CNU was led by
Owen Cook (+3) and
Brian O'Dea (+7) while the team effort included 15 sub-80 rounds over the 54-hole event.
CNU was one of only eight teams in the entire event that did not record a single round in the 80's, joining tournament champion Huntingdon, (T4th) Methodist, (6th) Illinois Wesleyan, (10th) Hampden-Sydney), (11th) Transylvania, (18th) NYU, and (T20th) Shenandoah.
After the first round of play, it was rookie
J.P. Carr out in front for the Captains with an even par 72. Recording his career low round, he dropped in three birdies, including on back-to-back holes on the 460-yard par four 11th and 353-yard par four 12th. Cook also had three birdies in the opening round and was two-over with a 74.
In the second round, Cook fired a one-over 73 with another three birdies paired with 12 pars in the round. O'Dea finished with a 76 and poured in a team-high four birdies in the second round. He notched a four on the 528-yard par five 1st and finished two-under on the long holes in the second round with two birdies and two pars.
Nick Alexander was three-over in the second round with a 75 and
Michael Thomas was just one stroke back with a four-over 76. Alexander had a tremendous run of three straight birdies as part of an eight-hole roll at par or better. He notched a two on the 202-yard par three 17th, a four on the 485-yard par five 18th, and another four on the 528-yard par five 1st. Thomas also birdied 18 and finished his second round with 11 pars.
In the final round, Alexander had another highlight on 18 when he eagled the par five finishing hole. In Sunday's finale, CNU got a tournament-best finish from
Michael Thomas with a one-under 71. He caught fire to move up to 78th on the individual leaderboard with a 10-over 226 (78-77-71). Thomas dropped in four more birdies in the round and added another 11 pars.
In addition to the under par finish by Thomas, both Cook and O'Dea finished at Even par with matching 72's. Cook had four birdies and 10 pars while O'Dea had 12 pars and three birdies. Neither player let their score grow to more than one-over on the day. Rounding out the counting scores in the third and final round was Carr, adding two more birdies and 12 pars to round out the tournament with a three-over 75.
The regular season will close for Christopher Newport on April 14-15 as the Captains take on the field at the Glenn Heath Memorial in Williamsburg.
