WINCHESTER, Va. -- Latrell Fomby smashed a pair of school records, while
Katie Stevens topped her own weight throw mark as the Christopher Newport track & field teams starred at the South Region Final Qualifier on Saturday at Shenandoah's Wilkins Athletics Center.
During the program's final appearance before the NCAA Championships begin next week, Fomby set fire to the history books. In the shot put, he uncorked a 16.12-meter launch, which bested his own program standard of 15.95 meters at the Betty Rogers Invitational in February. Meanwhile, he unleashed an 18.07-meter missile in the weight throw. That eclipsed
Dante Ntiganzwa's previous school record of 17.95 meters, which was set last year.
Along with breaking a pair of program standards, Fomby also jumped up the national charts in both events. The senior vaulted to 28th in the country in the shot put and 30th in the weight throw.
Katie Stevens also reset her own school and conference record in the weight throw on Saturday. During the meet, she launched a 17.80-meter heave. That eclipsed her previous standard of 17.56 meters, which she set at the exact same meet 12 months ago. It also moved her to 16th on this year's NCAA leaderboard.
Rounding out the historic efforts by the CNU throwers,
Daniel Young climbed to third in program history in the men's shot put after establishing a new PR with a 15.77-meter distance.
Several Captains also made their presence felt in the combined events. For the women,
Ellie Nuckols posted a score of 3,308 in the pentathlon. That marked the sixth-highest score in school history. Among her finest efforts on Saturday, the second-year star posted victories in the 800 (2:33.11), 60-hurdles (9.34), and long jump (5.41 meters). She also eclipsed 1.40 meters in the high jump and added a 9.55-meter toss in the shot put.
Overall, her score of 3,308 ranks 28th in the nation this year.
On the men's side,
Jahi Jemison and
Max Taylor both shined in the heptathlon. Leading the way, Jemison accumulated 3,871 points, which placed him seventh on the school's all-time charts. Showing an impressive skill-set, he was second in the 60 (7.25) and fourth in the 60-hurdles (9.20), high jump (1.71 meters), and pole vault (2.63 meters).
Meanwhile, Taylor finished with 3,647 points, which marked the 11th-highest total by a Captain. Headlining his work, he was third in the shot put (12.01 meters) and fourth in both the 1,000 (3:02.83) and high jump (1.71 meters).
In other events on the men's side,
Andrew Janetsky won the 3,000 in 9:01.96, while
Marshall Mattison excelled in a pair of sprints. The senior speedster completed the 60 in 7.06 and the 200 in 22.67.
On the women's side,
Ashley Eley led CNU with a 10.63-meter leap in the triple jump. Additionally, Stevens notched a team-best mark in the shot put with a 12.16-meter effort.
Christopher Newport will now await word on potential bids to the NCAA Indoor Championships, which begin on March 14 at the Golisano Training Center in Rochester, New York. The final list of meet participants will be posted on the NCAA's official website by 7 p.m. on Sunday.
