ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. --
Continuing the program's early-season road swing, the 15th-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will head to St. Mary's (Md.) for a 1 p.m. battle on Saturday at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium.

Entering the match-up, CNU sits at 1-0 on the season, while St. Mary's is 0-1. Both programs opened the year on the road last Saturday with the Captains knocking off Lynchburg, 13-4, while the Seahawks dropped a 15-14 overtime thriller at Shenandoah.

For those fans unable to attend Saturday's game, St. Mary's will provide live stats and a video stream of the action at SMCMAthletics.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

Headlining CNU's victory over Lynchburg last week, Kate Lamendola made history with a well-rounded showcase against the Hornets. During the contest, the second-year star caused six turnovers and added five goals. With that performance, she became the first player in program history to register at least five strikes and five takeaways in a single outing.

For her efforts, Lamendola was named the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.

Along with Lamendola, Faith O'Connor established a new career-high with four points, while Maelyn Eversole and Emilie Shoults also chipped in with multi-goal efforts. Overall, CNU produced five free-position goals during the game, which equaled the team's most since scoring six against Kean on March 5, 2022.

On the defensive side, Brookelyn Morrison came away with four caused turnovers, while Madi Rozgonyi added three strips of her own. Aided by their work last weekend, both standouts are in hot pursuit of history. Rozgonyi now has 82 career takeaways, which places her fourth on the program's all-time list and just eight shy of matching Emma Jackson's school record. Meanwhile, Morrison has 81 caused turnovers, which is tied for the sixth-most in school lore.

Showing impressive resolve in the team's season opener last week, St. Mary's overcame a two-goal deficit in the final two minutes of regulation to force overtime at Shenandoah. Madison Laine posted two points during the late rally, including an assist on the equalizer by Sanne Elling with 71 seconds left in the fourth quarter. However, the Hornets had an answer and sank the game-winner just two minutes into the extra session to lock up the 15-14 triumph.

Colin Horton led SMC with six goals during the contest, while Laine finished with five points. Between the pipes, Allie Greeley collected 15 saves during 55 minutes of work.

In 22 previous meetings between the two programs, Christopher Newport holds a 13-9 edge in the series with St. Mary's. Last year, the Captains notched a 20-8 win at Jennings Family Stadium. Morrison had 11 draw controls, five points, and three takeaways for the victors, while Laine netted a hat-trick for the Seahawks.

After Saturday, CNU will conclude its three-game road trip with a 7 p.m. match-up at Randolph-Macon on February 26.
