NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Eric Hiu has been added to the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse coaching staff as a volunteer assistant as the Captains prepare for the upcoming 2027 campaign.

In his position, Hiu will work primarily with the goalies and defense. He joins a staff led by head coach Lisa Valentine, who is beginning her 12th year at the helm of the program. The staff also includes fellow assistant coach Lindsay Weaver, who joined the squad earlier this fall.

A familiar face among the Hampton Roads lacrosse community, Hiu has served as the head coach of the Jamestown boys' lacrosse team since 2025 after guiding the girls' program from 2023-25. Additionally, he worked as a coach with the Williamsburg Warriors in various capacities from 2019-24.

In addition to his recent efforts in Virginia, Hiu previously served as a lacrosse coach at multiple stops both nationally and internationally. He was the girls' lacrosse head coach at Carlisle High School and the Lanco Elite Lacrosse Club in Pennsylvania before working with the Aloha Youth Lacrosse Association in Hawaii. Between those stops, he also spent time as an assistant coach with the Mainz University women's lacrosse team in Germany from 2013-16.

Prior to his professional work, Hiu was a standout player in his own right. He was an All-Conference defender and long-stick midfielder at St. Mary's (Md.) from 1990-94. After graduating, he has continued to compete with multiple club teams and is currently a member of the Rusty Cannons.

Along with his lacrosse endeavors, Hiu has spent over two decades serving with distinction in the United States Army. He earned a bachelor's degree in history at St. Mary's (Md.) and a master's degree in international relations at Troy State.

In his position with the Captains, Hiu will serve alongside his daughter, Alexa, who is beginning her second season as a team manager at CNU. Meanwhile, two of his other daughters have played collegiate lacrosse as Jesse Hiu excelled at Winthrop from 2013-16, while Ana Hiu is currently competing at UVA Wise.
