GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Saddled with the inability to move up the leaderboard in the second round, the Christopher Newport men's golf team was forced to settle with a rain-shortened finish at the O'Briant-Jensen Memorial in North Carolina. The Captains finished tied for 14th after weather forced the cancellation of the second round.
After the first round, Christopher Newport signed for a 33-over 317 to tie Averett University for 14th. Top-ranked Huntingdon (+11) won the event and bested 10th-ranked Methodist (+18) in second place by seven strokes. North Carolina Wesleyan freshman Juan Amil (E) won the event by one stroke over Roanoke's Chase Snyder (+1) and Huntingdon's Matthew Gover (+1).
For the Captains, sophomore
Jacob Foti (+4) led the way and tied for 11th with a 75. He wrapped up the fall with a team-best 74.0 stroke average in seven rounds of play. He finished in the top-20 of all four events the Captains entered this Fall and posed a pair of rounds at par or better.
Patrick O'Rourke (+8) tied for 48th with a 79 and
Fischer Leggitt (+10) tied for 65th after carding an 81 on the first day. Rounding out the action was
Nick Alexander (+11) and
Jimmy Spallone (+11), who each tied for 78th.
As a team, CNU finished just 13 strokes back of Lynchburg for third place. The Captains tied for 8th in Par 3 scoring (3.50) and Par 4 scoring (4.53).
The Captains are averaging 296.6 strokes this Fall and posted a first-, second-, and third-place finish in three events.
