CNU Secures Six-Stroke Victory at The Melee as Captains Golf Finishes 11-Over Par

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The Christopher Newport men's golf team captured a six-stroke victory over Bridgewater (+17) on Tuesday as the Captains closed out The Melee tournament with an 11-over 579 (289-290). CNU was led by a pair of top-five individual performances from Nick Alexander (+1) and Jacob Foti (+1) to capture the tournament crown. 

On day two of the 36-hole tournament, sophomore Jacob Foti had the low score for Christopher Newport with a one-under 70 to set a personal low for single round scoring. He also notched his finest 36-hole finish in two seasons with a one-over 143 (73-70) which also ranks as tied for the third best tournament finish of the year for Christopher Newport in 2025-26. 

Matching Foti's score, Alexander also tied for fourth with a one-over 143 (70-73). After his second round at par or better on Sunday, Alexander fired a two-over 73 on day two. Rookie Fischer Leggitt also finished in 73 strokes on day two and wrapped up a four-over 146 (73-73) to tie for eighth in the tournament. CNU led all teams with three players in the top ten on the leaderboard. 

The second round also included a three-over 74 from Patrick O'Rourke that propelled him into a tie for 12th. O'Rourke wrapped up the two-day event with a 148 (74-74). Rounding out the starting five for the championship CNU squad was Jimmy Spallone (+9) who tied for 20th with a 151 (73-78). 

As a team, the Captains fired a six-over 290 on day two and held off Bridgewater (+17) and Salisbury (+20) to round out the three team finishers.

Foti had four birdies and 12 pars in his round including a dominant run on the front nine. He recorded back-to-back birdies on the 540-yard par five 1st hole and the 362-yard par four 2nd before a run of three straight pars. Then, he dropped in another birdie on the 316-yard par four 6th hole followed by two more pars. He wrapped up the front nine with a bogey and a 34 (-2) through the first nine holes. On the back, he added six more pars and a birdie on the 533-yard par five 15th. 

Alexander snagged three birdies, including back-to-back three's on the 6th and 7th holes while dropping in one on the 15th as well. Leggitt had 12 pars and two birdies on day two and O'Rourke added one birdie, on 18, and 12 pars. 

Leading the Captains' 'B' team was Stephen Patterson with a one-over 72 on day two. Patterson tied for 16th overall with a seven-over 149 (77-72). Elsewhere on the 'B' team entry was Charles Valiulis (+8) and Nathan Smith (+8) on day two. Paxton Ihm finished with an 11-over 82 on day two and Owen Taylor added a 12-over 83. 

Playing as individuals, J.P. Carr signed for a 10-over 81 and Connor Wood added a nine-over 80 on day two. Carr tied for 44th with a 17-over 159 (78-81) and Wood tied for 35th with a13-over 155 (75-80). 

CNU will close out the fall portion of its schedule on October 27-28 at the O'Briant-Jensen Memorial Golf Tournament in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Captains will play at The Cardinal by Pete Dye in the event hosted by Guilford College.
