HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. -- Recording the second lowest round of the tournament, the Christopher Newport men's golf team fired an eight-over 296 on day two of the Battle at Bulle Rock golf tournament in Havre De Grace, Maryland to finish in second place with a 23-over 599 (303-296). The Captains also entered a second team into the event and they finished in third place with a 42-over 618 (306-312).
Another impressive round from the freshman class highlighted the second day's action in Maryland as
Jimmy Spallone vaulted up the individual leaderboard with a two-under 70. It marks the third time this season a rookie has finished under par in a round and helped Spallone skyrocket to second overall in the tournament with a three-over 147 (77-70).
Spallone finished one stroke ahead of
Fischer Leggitt (+4), the Captains' opening round leader, who tied for third place with a 148 (73-75).
Nick Alexander (+7) captured sixth place to lead the Captains' 'B' team entry while
Patrick O'Rourke (+9) and
Charles Valiulis (+9) tied for eighth to round out a group of five CNU players in the top-ten of the individual leaderboard.
Not far behind,
Owen Taylor (+10) and
Jacob Foti (+10) finished one stroke back and tied for 15th with
Paxton Ihm (+12) in 21st and
Nathan Smith (+14) tied for 26th.
Paced by Spallone, CNU finished the second day with a 296 after all five starters recorded sub-80 finishes in the second round. Spallone knocked in five birdies, including a stretch of three in four holes, and added ten pars. Finishing the second round at Even par, O'Rourke led all CNU players with six birdies and paired them with six pars. Aside from a pair of big holes, Leggitt had another strong overall performance with one birdie and 12 pars. Finally, Smith had 11 pars and two birdies in the second round.
The 'B' team got a pair of birdies and ten pars from Alexander as the veteran rounded out a strong 151 (74-77).
Owen Taylor had the low round for the 'B' team with a four-over 76 after sinking four birdies and adding eight pars.
Stephen Patterson finished with a 78 on day two and recorded nine pars and two birdies with both coming on par five holes. Rounding out the counting scores for the 'B' team was Ihm, who added an 81 with 12 pars in the round.
Dickinson captured the team title with a 20-over 596 (305-291), edging out the CNU squad by just three total swings.
Christopher Newport will return to action on October 19-20 as they participate in The Melee at Ford's Colony CC in Williamsburg, Va.
