NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Kicking off the indoor campaign in style,
Seth Morris established a new school record in the shot put, while several other Captains added their names to the history books as the Christopher Newport track & field teams starred at the CNU Holiday Open on Sunday at the Freeman Center.
Headlining the action, Morris won the shot put with a 15.85-meter launch. That bested his PR by nearly three feet and toppled the previous program record of 15.65 meters, which was set by Ryan Gordon in 2008. Incidentally, Gordon's father, Butch, was the man who marked Morris' record-setting throw on Sunday.
Along with Morris,
Colin Sliwa added a win in the men's weight throw with a 16.03-meter toss. That marked the seventh-longest heave in program history. Meanwhile,
Ben Varner placed second in the event after notching a distance of 15.00 meters.
Also making history on Sunday,
Ashley Eley captured the women's high jump after eclipsing 1.58 meters. That equaled the seventh-highest clearance in school lore.
In addition to the historic performers,
Katie Stevens kicked off her senior campaign with a pair of victories. The fourth-year phenom posted a 15.36-meter mark in the weight throw and a 12.39-meter effort in the shot put.
In other field events on the women's side,
Lily Knowles placed second in the pole vault (2.93 meters),
D'yan Robinson was eighth in the triple jump (10.28 meters), and
Grace Damewood came in ninth in the long jump (4.83 meters). On the track, Robinson also added a team-best mark in the 60 after finishing in 8.42, while
Kendal Brown kicked off her collegiate career with a time of 11.63 in the 60-hurdles. That placed her 14th in the field.
On the men's side,
Mikael Gessesse was seventh in the triple jump (12.99 meters), while
Nick Williams led the squad in a pair of events. The first-year standout came in eighth in the high jump (1.66 meters) and 20th in the long jump (5.85 meters).
Rounding out the team's top performers on Sunday,
Roth Thomas was 10th in the 200 (23.80),
Darrin Gallegos-Perches finished 13th in the 60-hurdles (9.51), and
Marshall Mattison placed 14th in the 60 after completing the prelims in 7.21.
"The men's throws group was obviously the big story with Seth's school record along with Colin's elevation to the 16m club and Ben's to the 15m club in the weight," said head coach
Tyler Wingard. "They accounted for 10 of our 16 PRs today. Overall, the team as a whole did what we wanted and needed from them, and that will serve us really well this year."
Christopher Newport will return to action on January 17 when CNU hosts the Captains Invitational at the Freeman Center.
