CLINTON, Miss. -- Testing themselves against the top programs in the area, the Christopher Newport cross country teams will take part in the NCAA South Regional Championships on Saturday at the Choctaw Trails in Clinton, Mississippi.
The regional meet begins with the women's 6k at 11 a.m. EST, while the men's 8k will start one hour later. For those fans unable to attend the competition, live results will be available at NCAA.com. A direct link can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Christopher Newport is one of 34 schools that will be represented at Saturday's competition. Entering the meet, the Captains are ranked sixth in the South on the men's side, while the women are slotted 10th in the region.
Among the top challengers in the South, six teams are currently listed in the top-25 of the USTFCCCA National Poll. For the men, Lynchburg is 12th in the country, Washington and Lee is 15th, and Emory is 23rd. On the women's side, Emory is 10th, Washington and Lee is 12th, and Lynchburg is 17th.
The winning teams on Saturday will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, which will be held at the LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Indiana on November 23. Meanwhile, 22 additional programs from around the country will earn at-large berths.
Along with the team qualifiers, the top-seven individual finishers at Saturday's meet will also earn a spot at the national competition.
Christopher Newport enters the weekend after stockpiling awards at the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships on November 2. During the league meet,
Clayton Rankin,
Luke Tompkins, and
Sarah Dake all secured first-team All-Conference nods, while
Andrew Janetsky,
Tom Foti,
Luke Hawkins, and
Lena Blagg hauled in second-team plaudits.
Janetsky was also the top freshman finisher at the race after placing ninth in the men's 8k.
Consistently successful on the regional stage, the men have finished in the top-10 in each of the past 11 competitions, including back-to-back victories in 2016 and 2017. Last year, the Captains placed eighth in the field, while Tompkins, Hawkins, Foti, Rankin, and
Evan Young are all back after registering top-100 finishes.
On the women's side, Christopher Newport has been equally successful with top-10 marks at every regional meet since 2013. Last fall, the squad placed seventh overall. Among the returners,
Courtney Mudd finished 51st in the field in 2023, while Dake was 63rd.
Daniel Ferrante was the last Captain to advance to the national meet after qualifying as an individual in both 2022 and 2023.
Madi Rawlings was the last woman to reach the NCAA Championships after joining Ferrante two years ago.
