LOGAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- Four Captains posted historic efforts, while a multitude of standouts added personal-best marks as the Christopher Newport cross country teams excelled at the ninth annual Border Battle, which was hosted by Rowan University at the DREAM Park in Logan Township, New Jersey.
During the meet, two men broke the 26-minute barrier in the 8k and helped Christopher Newport place seventh in the final team standings. That marked the program's top finish at the prestigious competition, besting an eighth-place showing by the 2022 Captains.
On the women's side, a pair of standouts threw down sub-24-minute times in the 6k. Aided by those efforts, CNU finished 18th in the standings.
Leading the men's contingent,
Clayton Rankin placed 43rd overall with a time of 25:44.4. That effort vaulted him to 30th on the program's all-time 8k performance list. Just a few seconds later, freshman
Andrew Janetsky came in 51st in 25:51.4, which bumped him to 35th in CNU history.
Along with the top-two stars,
Luke Tompkins and
Tom Foti also established new PRs after crossing the line in 26:00.6 and 26:17.5, respectively. Moments later,
Luke Hawkins placed 100th overall with a time of 26:43.0.
Rounding out the top-seven, two more Captains set personal-best marks on Saturday.
Johnny Atienza clocked in at 26:54.0, while
Kevin Farnsworth added a 27:04.4 standard.
The women also rewrote the history books as
Lena Blagg and
Sarah Bland broke into the program's top-50 in the 6k. Blagg came in 49th in the field in 23:14.3, which placed her 27th on the all-time charts. Shortly thereafter, Bland added a time of 23:47.0. That bumped her to 42nd on CNU's historic leaderboard.
Along with the freshmen phenoms,
Josie Brumfield was 91st in 24:00.1, which set a new personal-standard by 24 seconds.
Courtney Mudd followed in 24:35.5, while
Sydney Chipperfield also added a PR with a time of 25:19.8. Capping off the domination by the program's first-year standouts,
Katherine Streeter crossed in 25:39.3.
Christopher Newport also had several runners entered in the men's Open 8k, which wrapped up Saturday's action.
Jason Sangiuliano led that group with a mark of 28:21.8. That placed him 60th overall.
The Captains will now set their sights on the championship season, which begins with the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference title meet on November 2. CNU will host that competition at Lee Hall Mansion.
